26 Military History Degree Programs

The Doctoral School of Military Sciences has a wide spectrum of research fields: Security Studies, Social Aspects of Defence Studies, General Military Theory, Theories of Military Science, Defence Logistics and Defence Economics, National Security and Theory of Defence Information Technology and Communication.

This MA programme provides an in-depth introduction into the disciplines of military history and strategic studies. It aims to immerse students in the study of conflict from the late 1700s to the present-day, providing them with an overview of the development of modern warfare and also the skills necessary to analyse modern conflicts.

Discover how conflict has shaped nations, societies and ideology throughout history. Explore what drives nations to go to war and people to fight them, understand how technology and propaganda has changed not only warfare, but societies as a whole.

This programme is identified with the art and concepts of war from the beginning of recorded history until today. The candidate who develops a thesis in this particular military field should be able to develop original concepts to provide an understanding of the interrelationships between the political, strategic, operational, tactical and technical levels of warfare in the past, focusing on the application of these same principles to contemporary battlefields.

The Citadel’s Master of Arts in Military History is a fully online, 30-hour program. The program provides an advanced historical study of the theory and practice of warfare, the institutions, and operations of military forces, and the impact of militaries and warfare on societies. The Missouri Army National Guard Show Me GOLD (Guard Officer Leadership Development) Program is a pre-Officer Candidate School preparation program. Students may use their Military Science Credits to pursue a Military Science academic minor. GOLD Program students are officer candidates. Northwest offers the Guard Officer Leadership Development Program on the Maryville campus. The Show Me GOLD Program is an officer candidate school preparation program resulting in a commission as a second lieutenant in the Army National Guard. Students enlist in the Army National Guard and attend basic and advanced individual training. They are then attached to the Northwest GOLD Detachment where they take military science courses on the Maryville Campus from Army National Guard instructors. Between their junior and senior year, student officer candidates then attend the accelerated National Guard Officer Candidate School where upon completion they are commissioned as second lieutenants in the Army Guard. The students then return to Northwest to complete their degrees. While completing their degrees, the GOLD Lieutenants fulfill their military duties working with the GOLD Program. GOLD Program students may apply their military science coursework toward a minor in Military Science.
