The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying students with the ability to perform visual examinations and relevant procedures included in the scope of Optometry (as stipulated by the Professional Board of Optometry and Dispensing Opticians) in the clinical environment as an optometrist.

Advanced training in veterinary clinical laboratory diagnostics including theoretical as well as practical knowledge of clinical biochemistry, clinical endocrinology, haematology, cytology, capita selecta aspects of: diagnostic bacteriology; diagnostic virology; diagnostic immunology; diagnostic protozoology; diagnostic toxicology and diagnostic parasitology; quality control; applied biometry; electronics/optics of laboratory equipment, and computer use.

Students participating in the Master’s program will be required to write and present a research dissertation.

Candidates must write a dissertation on their research project in Nutrition and at least a concept research paper for publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.The progress of all master's candidates is monitored biannually by the supervisor and the postgraduate coordinator. A candidate's study may be terminated if the progress is unsatisfactory or if the candidate is unable to finish his/her studies during the prescribed period.

The BSc (Biotechnology) program is an interdepartmental program with a particular emphasis on molecular biology, which is aimed at empowering students to pursue their interest in biotechnology. Undergraduate training includes exposure to aspects of biochemistry, genetics and microbiology, in addition to the other subjects of a student’s choice. Students are encouraged to decide on their postgraduate research direction during the course of their undergraduate studies and to choose their electives accordingly.

The BSc Hons Physiology comprises 8 modules and a project which prepares the student for further postgraduate study. The department determines the availability of modules.
