9 Medicine and Health Sciences Degree Programs in Latvia

The Ph.D. in Health Care (Sub-programmes: Medicine, Pharmacy, Psychology) program aims to prepare highly qualified scientists and academics in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, and psychology by using an integrative and complementary approach. The approach allows for addressing challenges related to human health in order to implement and independently manage research projects at both a national and international level. The aim is also to develop academic competence to ensure education continuity and sustainability.

This programme is based on studies of natural sciences, biology, medicine and basic principles of primary eye care service. The study program has been developed based on more than 25 years of experience in the training of optometrists at the University of Latvia.

The programme corresponds to EU standards and professional requirements set for MDs. The obtained degree is in line with European labour market requirements (part of the European comparative degree system) and allows free movement within Europe.

This program aims to prepare doctors of science, highly qualified researchers and specialists with appropriate knowledge, skills and competences about the importance of the human factor in work processes, safety at work and occupational health, as well as to obtain internationally comparable competence and an internationally comparable Ph.D. degree.

The professional Master's programme Optometry (Clinical) offers multidisciplinary studies based on visual science and contemporary primary vision care. The study program has been developed based on more than 25 years of experience in the training of optometrists at the University of Latvia.

The program prepares highly qualified specialists who can work at regional, national and international level. Students will be able to understand and develop epidemiological, medical and sociological research methodology, to perform sophisticated statistical analyses of obtained data, and to interpret observed results based on newest international knowledge and according to internationally accepted standards.

The study programme enables students to acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in the field of biotechnology and bioengineering, acquire skills in the design of equipment and processes, and product development. The programme prepares highly qualified specialists and scientists able to compete on both the local and international scientific labour markets.

The aim of the study programme is to produce a caring, knowledgeable, competent and skilful dentist who is able, on graduation, to accept professional responsibility for the effective and safe care of patients, who appreciates the need for continuing professional development, who can utilise advances in relevant knowledge and techniques and who understands the role of patients in decision making.

The Master's Degree in Biostatistics program's students has access to well-equipped auditoriums and modern computer classrooms with the latest logistical resources, IT equipment, statistical software (R, SAS, IBM SPSS Statistics, STATA), audio and video equipment, interactive whiteboards, as well as a library with extensive research databases from around the world.
