The Master of Applied Research in Social Sciences (MRESS) programme offers a master's degree by research and is primarily designed for social science graduates who are interested in upgrading their qualifications, knowledge and skills.

The Department offers an established graduate program leading to the Master of Arts in Sociology. The program is designed to provide all students with a strong foundation in sociological theory and research methodology. The graduate program is designed to allow for a substantial degree of student choice. Students may choose a macro- or micro-based program of study and select from several areas for further specialization or experience. These areas include, but are not restricted to, such concentrations as social research and computer applications; sociology of education; community and clinical sociology; law and society; criminology and deviance; and general sociology. Students are expected to select a major advisor who can best facilitate their specific interests in the program. Finally, students may choose one of the following options to complete their program of graduate study: comprehensive exam, thematic project or thesis. Students with an interest in teaching and administrative applications of the degree are encouraged to complete via examination. Those with research interests or who may wish to pursue advanced graduate study toward a doctoral degree are encouraged to opt for the thesis or thematic project options.

This Master’s degree is a two-year program that provides advanced training for positions of the social researcher in private research institutes in the field of marketing and communication, customer satisfaction and opinion research, as well as in public research institutions (for instance, institutes and foundations involved in education research or in the analysis of labor market and welfare trends).

The Master in Sociology will provide the students with advanced theoretical, methodological and analytical tools and skills with which to examine, explore, advance, and apply sociological knowledge to a large range of sociological questions. It aims to train students to analyze specific issues about contemporary societies.

The Quantitative Sociology and Demography course offers innovative and demanding training in quantitative sociology, in line with the most contemporary developments in the discipline and fully in line with the scientific dynamics of the Institut Polytechnique de Paris . The training responds to current challenges by relying on the recognized expertise of ENSAE - in partnership with UVSQ and ENS Paris-Saclay - in the training of students in quantitative methods.

This phenomenon, known as ‘social exclusion’, is a complex condition that extends beyond economic disadvantage and poverty. It is a multifaceted process through which people lose political, legal, and social agency, resulting in stigmatisation or discrimination. Against this global background, students in this programme learn the principles of coexistence and explore tools for analysing social exclusion from a multidisciplinary and international perspective.

The Master's Degree Programme in Computational Social and Political Science (CSPS) equips students with the knowledge and competences needed to provide empirically-grounded and theoretically-informed explanations of political and social phenomena applying computational and quantitative methods of analysis to quantitative and qualitative data.

Prospective students may be required to submit an admissions essay or to sit for an examination or to do additional modules to enable them to reach the desired level of study.

This program will give you in-depth knowledge of sociology and media. It will develop your methodological and analytical skills in a wide range of applications in sociology and media studies.
