The Department of Chemistry "Ugo Schiff" of the University of Florence offers a new Master course in Advanced Molecular Sciences to train and educate the next generation of chemists on the cutting-edge aspects of research in Chemistry of Materials and Life Sciences that will give them the skills required for an advanced career in industry and academia. The Master in Cellular and Molecular Biotechnology (CMB) Over the last decade, significant methodological and conceptual advances in the life sciences area have enabled the development of the so-called “new biology.” This new biology is mainly based on the ability to study cells at a molecular level thanks to the increasing availability of genomic sequences of many species and the possibility to determine, in a comprehensive way, gene expression profiles as well as the interactions between biological macromolecules.

The master in Nanoscience and Molecular Nanotechnology is an interuniversity Master participated by 7 Spanish Universities. There are significant theoretical-practical and practical strands to the study programs which allow participants to extend their knowledge base and acquire laboratory training in the methods of modern Molecular and Cell Biology. There is a further component focusing on Bio-business that should help the transfer of knowledge acquired during the second cycle to the market place, and the setting up of biotechnology micro companies. Molecular and Cell Biology is one of the cornerstones of biotechnology and with a solid training in this area, graduates should be well prepared to set up micro companies to operate in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors. The growing use of new molecular and genetic diagnostic tools in the national health service and in the food industry means there is a call for professionals with a solid training in the biomolecular sciences. The 2nd cycle in Molecular and Cell Biology at Aveiro was designed with the intention of preparing professionals for the field with competences in modern methods for the analysis of genes and genomes, RNA, proteins and other biomolecules that are of importance in clinical diagnostics and food safety.
