8 Fine Arts and Illustration Master's Degree Programs in China

The three-year international Master in Fine Arts (iMFA) program under the guidance of the Institute of Radio, Film, and Television, equips students with practical skills like script writing, film and television production, and new media audio-visual editing. Our students will take academic and practice-based courses with faculty members from CMIC, while having the opportunity to choose business-related courses at ZIBS. Mentors of this program graduated from world-class universities like the University of Michigan and the University of Art in Berlin. Established practitioners are hired as visiting scholars.

The School of Fine Arts was established in 2001. With its development, the School now has a provincial key discipline: Fine Arts Studies. Also, the school has obtained a lot of awards in the national or provincial academic exhibition; published over 80 academic monographs, painting albums, and more than 200 academic papers. The school now has 48 academic staff including 8 professors, 10 associated professors, 2 doctoral supervisors, and 13 master’s supervisors. Till now, the School of Fine Arts comprises 6 departments including the Department of Traditional Chinese Painting, the Department of Oil painting, the Department of Sculpture, the Department of Art Design, the Department of Calligraphy, and the Department of Art History. The School of Fine Arts currently offers 3 undergraduate programs including Painting, Sculpture, and Visual Communication; 2 master’s degree programs including Art Studies and Fine Arts Studies. In addition, the school established three research laboratories and a research center. Also, it has perfected teaching facilities, 5 arts computer rooms, and more than 200 specialized computers. The School of Fine Arts is dedicated to the training of professional artistic talents. By learning from some other national key Fine Arts schools and integrating their teaching ideas and methods, the School of Fine Arts has formed a sound academic environment and unique teaching features. Meanwhile, the School of Fine Arts pays more attention to foreign cultural exchanges and has established a sound exchange and cooperation relationship with those schools in the USA, Japan, the Republic of Belarus, and Australia successively. The graduate program (MFA) in School of Design, East China Normal University offers an interdisciplinary study and research platform, which includes five discipline directions: Fashion Design, Industrial Design, Environmental Design and Landscape Design, Public Art, and Animation Design. Students are free to choose courses that interest them in these four different directions.

Students extend and deepen their knowledge through an appropriate research investigation under a supervisory panel with expertise in the proposed area of research. They develop critical and analytical skills, and advanced research skills to enable in-depth exploration of their chosen area, including for creative or professional practice. All students are required to successfully complete the research training coursework subject 51913 Academic Research Practice which will develop their research knowledge and skills.

The Master of Animation and Visualisation has been developed in partnership with the industry-leading digital animation studio Animal Logic and is offered through the UTS Animal Logic Academy. The course develops creative professional practice, conceptual skills and technical dexterity in animation and visualisation production. Under the guidance and mentorship of practitioners and leaders from the industry, learning is modelled on real-world production work structures in a custom-built digital production studio, engineered to the highest industry standards with tools and technologies that are leading the animation and visualisation industries into the future.

School of Media and Art has already set up a rational, creative team to teach and research and gather a team of well-known artists. The school has more than 50 research staff members, including 16 associate professors, 10 staff members with doctor degree, more than 30% of the tutors have overseas teaching experience.
