The Two Year MA aims to present students with a wide range of theories and methods in sociology and social anthropology while examining their interaction and integration in the study of globalization and urban studies. The study of globalization and urban studies is conceived in the department as both a material and a formal object.

The Master's in Sociology (MA, MS) program aims to train professionals capable of addressing the analysis of relevant social and political problems from a comprehensive perspective, based on solid training within the field of Sociology. The Master of Applied Research in Social Sciences (MRESS) programme offers a master's degree by research and is primarily designed for social science graduates who are interested in upgrading their qualifications, knowledge and skills.

Two-year MA program in Sociology and Social Anthropology with optional specialization in Global and Urban Studies. The Two-Year MA requires that students take a total of 62 credits, of these 48 credits in coursework. (14 credits for the Thesis Consultation and Defense are not included in the required 62 credits!) In the first year, a minimum of 30 credits is to be undertaken. A further 18 credits may be taken in the second year.

This Master’s degree is a two-year program that provides advanced training for positions of the social researcher in private research institutes in the field of marketing and communication, customer satisfaction and opinion research, as well as in public research institutions (for instance, institutes and foundations involved in education research or in the analysis of labor market and welfare trends).

This program provides knowledge in the present-day field of sociology and social anthropology, including both theory and research methods. There are three specialisations: Civil Society and Politics, Anthropology of Space and Mobility, Identities, Health and Bodies or a double degree in Sociology of Contemporary Societies with the University of Florence. You can find employment in the education sector, state and public administration, the nonprofit sector, corporate organisations, or academia.

In the GW Master of Arts in Sociology program, students focus on social stratification and inequality while honing their skills in sociological theory and research methods. Students develop specific expertise in their chosen major and minor fields, with elective options including Race and Urban Development; Principles of Demography; and Race, Gender and Class. This programme reflects the expertise of our School of Sociology, Politics and International Studies in research methods training. It provides comprehensive training in the whole process of research conceptualisation, design and operationalization. The programme is particularly suitable for those seeking a career as a social science researcher or going on to a PhD, including the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)-funded doctoral study.

The Department offers an established graduate program leading to the Master of Arts in Sociology. The program is designed to provide all students with a strong foundation in sociological theory and research methodology. The graduate program is designed to allow for a substantial degree of student choice. Students may choose a macro- or micro-based program of study and select from several areas for further specialization or experience. These areas include, but are not restricted to, such concentrations as social research and computer applications; sociology of education; community and clinical sociology; law and society; criminology and deviance; and general sociology. Students are expected to select a major advisor who can best facilitate their specific interests in the program. Finally, students may choose one of the following options to complete their program of graduate study: comprehensive exam, thematic project or thesis. Students with an interest in teaching and administrative applications of the degree are encouraged to complete via examination. Those with research interests or who may wish to pursue advanced graduate study toward a doctoral degree are encouraged to opt for the thesis or thematic project options.
