The Masters of Optometry Program at JMC was established 16 years ago. The Optometry Department was established 28 years ago and has been leading the field of optometric education in both undergraduate and graduate studies. The MSc Primary Care Ophthalmology is developed in partnership with NHS Education for Scotland (NES) as part of the Scottish Government's directive to empower and enhance the shift of balance of care for cataract, glaucoma, medical retina, emergency and ophthalmic triage from secondary to primary care.

Optometry is a healthcare profession concerned with examination, diagnosis and treatment of the human visual system. In our ageing population, the demand for eye care is expected to increase, and optometrists are ideally placed to help meet this demand. A master's degree in Veterinary Medicine (MMedVet) is a clinical specialty degree at NQF-level 9 of 360 credits to be completed in 3 years of full-time study as part of a residential training program. The training program consists of clinical work (at least 90 weeks of supervised clinical training), coursework, culminating in a multi-component examination (270 credits) and a research project resulting in a mini-dissertation (of 90 credits) and subsequent publications as required for SAVC registration as a specialist.

The University Master's Degree in Research in Vision Sciences (MICCV) is an inter-university degree, aimed at university research and teaching training, which is the first step towards a doctoral thesis. It offers comprehensive training in Vision Sciences, combining biomedical, physical-optical and neurophysiological aspects, as well as the essential prior preparation for a future scientific researcher and university teacher. The Institute of Applied Ophthalmobiology (IOBA), of the University of Valladolid, is responsible for the academic coordination of this master's degree, in which the Universities of Alcalá, Complutense de Madrid, Murcia and Santiago de Compostela also participate.
