44 Natural Sciences Masters Degree Programs in Czech Republic

The master’s degree program is designed in accordance with the definition of Bioengineering, which is generally an engineering discipline based on knowledge of scientific disciplines. The study program educates students to solve bioengineering problems in the fields of production, development, and testing of new biomaterials that are designed and manufactured for interaction with biological systems. 

CERGE-EI (Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education - Economics Institute) is a joint workplace of Charles University and the Economics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

The Pharmaceutical Sciences study program puts stress especially on study of pharmaceutical disciplines as pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutical analysis, pharmacology, natural drugs and drug forms, especially knowledge of pharmaceutical analysis and drug research. It is two years lasting follow-up master program. Specializations are not part of the study program.

The “Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Engineering” study program reflects the strong demand for hydrogen technology specialists in the European labor market. This program is a Master's program culminating with the Czech title Ing. (equivalent to an MSc.). Applicants should hold a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Technology, Chemical Engineering, or an equivalent degree. The program is taught in English (minimum B2 level competency).

The study program “Chemistry, Technology, and Materials” consists of two specializations, “Chemistry and Chemical Technology” and “Materials Chemistry and Technology”. This program is designed as a follow-up Master's program (culminating with a Master's degree and the Czech title Ing., the equivalent of an MSc). The program builds upon prior education of graduates with bachelor degrees (Bc) from the UCT Prague “Chemistry and Technology” bachelor program or an equivalent bachelor program at a university or comparable institution abroad.

The aim of the study program “Computer Science – Language Technologies and Computational Linguistics” is to get the graduates ready for research in the area of natural language processing and the development of applications dealing with both written and spoken language. Examples of such applications are systems of information retrieval, information extraction and summarization, machine translation, text analytics, grammar checking, automatic speech recognition, spoken dialogue systems, and speech synthesis. The emphasis is put on a deep understanding of formal mathematical and algorithmic foundations and their practical applicability in natural language processing tasks. Students of the program have the possibility to focus either on theoretical aspects of formal description of natural languages or on the technology-oriented side (state-of-the-art methods in statistics, machine learning, and deep learning) for language data processing.

The ‘Atmospheric Physics, Meteorology and Climatology’ program leads students to acquire knowledge and skills in the field of atmospheric properties and the related processes. Within the framework of Charles University, this program is unique in its comprehensive view of the Earth's atmosphere as a dynamic system in a broad interdisciplinary context. Even within the Czech Republic, this is the only program providing full-scale education in the field of atmospheric physics, meteorology, and climatology. The program follows from the bachelor's study of physics, in which students acquire the necessary knowledge of basic physical principles (mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, optics, and others) as well as proficiency in related mathematical methods. The elements of the study program are primarily focused on acquiring theoretical knowledge in the field of atmospheric physics (hydrodynamics and atmospheric thermodynamics), thus extending previously acquired expertise in this field. Furthermore, skills necessary for practical as well as scientific activities in the field of atmospheric physics are acquired during the study, especially in the field of numerical mathematics, mathematical statistics, data processing, and visualization. Part of the course aims to prepare graduates for basic applications of atmospheric physics, such as weather forecasting, air pollution analysis, and climate research (including modeling and research of higher atmospheric layers). Other subjects of the program serve to deepen the student's focus in particular specialized topics or to expand knowledge in areas close to other physical disciplines (e.g., electrical, optical, and acoustic phenomena in the atmosphere or the oceans). As a part of the study, a master-level diploma thesis is prepared and submitted, in which the application of competencies acquired during the study is demonstrated, as well as the ability to cooperate in solving the assigned scientific problem.

The program consists of two closely related study tracks, Visual Computing, and Computer Game Development. Within the scope of Visual Computing, the program offers training in a wide range of visual sciences, including geometric modeling, rendering (image synthesis) as well as the basics of image analysis and computer vision. The Computer Game Development focuses - apart from computer graphics techniques - on artificial intelligence and intelligent agent systems as well as on software engineering skills necessary for the development of large-scale gaming projects. Both study tracks place emphasis on general programming skills, both at the system level closer to the hardware as well as on the higher level of modern programming languages.

The Computational Mathematics program is devoted to the development, analysis, algorithmization, and implementation of methods for the computer processing of mathematical models. It represents a transition from theoretical mathematics to practically useful results. An emphasis is placed on the creative use of information technology and the production of programming applications. An integral part of the program is the verification of employed methods. The study is a natural continuation of the bachelor's program General Mathematics, branch Numerical Analysis and Mathematical Modelling at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University. The program Computational Mathematics is designed in such a way that it enables to admit also students who finished a bachelor's study of Mathematics of another branch or at another university, requiring that they complete the missing knowledge. The students will first obtain knowledge of the modern theory of partial differential equations, linear and nonlinear functional analysis, finite element method, basics of numerical software, and methods for matrix calculations. Later the students will choose elective courses, in particular, according to the topic of their master’s thesis.

Masters in Metallurgical Engineering The study program is aimed at educating specialists in modern metallurgy and engineering. Initially, basic common theoretical courses are taught, suitably complemented by courses in materials science, management, and quality management. The study program also covers the subjects of iron and steel production, foundry, and bulk-forming.

Double Degree master programme in analytical logistics in cooperation with Molde University College – Specialized University in Logistics, Norway.

The study program Mathematical analysis provides to the students advanced knowledge in several branches of mathematics which are traditionally considered to belong to mathematical analysis (theory of real functions, complex analysis, functional analysis, theory of both ordinary and partial differential equations). It is characterized by a deep insight into these branches and focuses on their mutual connections. An advanced level of basic knowledge in these branches is reached by attending mandatory courses. In elective courses, students deepen their knowledge in more narrow areas, chosen namely with respect to the topic of their master thesis. Thanks to the seminars the students may be in touch with current problems of mathematical research.

Surface and plasma physics is a master's degree program of interdisciplinary character that includes fundamental knowledge of interactions of neutral and charged particles in vacuum, gas, and condensed phases and on the interfaces of these environments. The program provides expertise in surface physics and thin films, especially atomic and molecular nanostructures on solid surfaces with a significant link to physico-chemical and transport processes with applications in the field of catalysts, sensors, or molecular electronics. The program in the field of laboratory and cosmic plasma physics covers the fields of plasma chemistry, hot and fusion plasma, and distinct topics in astrophysics. During the course of study, the use of modern diagnostic methods in material research, vacuum and plasma technologies, and in the analysis of various kinds of space plasma or controlled thermonuclear fusion can be adopted. Individual disciplines can be oriented experimentally, theoretically, or solved by computer physics methods.

The master level program "Mathematical structures" is aimed at broadening students' general mathematical background in algebra, geometry, combinatorics, and mathematical logic, and at acquiring a deeper knowledge in selected parts of these areas. The aim is to offer a fairly general overview of modern structural mathematics as well as lead the student towards independent creative work. The emphasis is on areas in which we have lecturers that are on top of their fields.
