In your optional studies, you can deepen your skills as a string musician by participating in audition training or training for acting as the principal/leader of strings and playing parts. As a master’s student, you will continue your soloist studies, study chamber music, general music studies, and communications, and improve your career and study skills. You can also select optional courses comprising 30 credits. For example, you may choose to complete pedagogical studies, giving you the qualifications to work as a teacher.

The Sibelius Academy is one of the few European institutions that offer master’s studies in fortepiano. We give you the chance to hone your skills in playing this unique historical instrument and learn more about music composed between the years 1730 and 1850, in particular.

The core of the programme is weekly one-on-one instruction given by the best teachers in the field. Graduates of the programme have the skills to work as orchestra musicians, soloists, chamber musicians, or music teachers. You can also complete a larger study module in pedagogical studies required for working as a teacher.

During your studies, you will receive the necessary knowledge and skills in African-American music, music culture, and performance practices to become a professional. Upon graduating, you may take on demanding roles as a musician, bandleader, composer&arranger, and pedagogue. Finnish jazz professionals such as Timo Lassy, Verneri Pohjola, Aki Rissanen, and Kalle Kalima are all alumni of the Sibelius Academy who have established themselves in the Finnish and international music scene. At the master’s degree stage, you can choose almost a third of your courses freely. In addition to instrument classes and ensemble playing, you may choose e.g. music business courses or pedagogical studies needed for working as a teacher. During your studies, you will also participate in different musical projects, masterclasses, and social events.

We give you the chance to study guitar at the highest possible level and help you in your journey of becoming exactly the kind of artist that you aspire to be. You will also acquire the competence to work as a highly competent guitar teacher. Almost all of Finland’s most esteemed classical guitar players have completed their degrees at the Sibelius Academy.
