The Master's program in Mathematics is a joint initiative by the Departments of Mathematics at Stockholm University and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH). It is a two-year program at the advanced level and leads to a joint master's degree in mathematics from Stockholm University and KTH.

It also gives you the possibility to start an academic career. In Mathematical Statistics and Financial Mathematics, you study courses in mathematics but you also train stochastic thinking and statistic skills. It contains courses in e.g. probability theory, stochastic analysis, insurance mathematics, and financial modeling.

The joint master’s programme in Mathematics is hosted by world-leading experts and research groups at KTH and Stockholm University. Students specialise in their desired areas of mathematics while acquiring essential skills in problem-solving and logical reasoning. Graduates become industrial mathematicians, often data analysts, financial analysts or within software engineering, or go on to PhD studies at prominent institutions.

The purpose of the Master’s programme in Mathematics is to give students advanced theoretical knowledge of mathematics together with practical skills to apply this knowledge both to mathematical problems and in applications of mathematics. A highly flexible structure that allows for individual adaptation, a diversified curriculum, a high theoretical level and an active research-oriented environment are some of the strongest features of the programme. The programme has two specialisations: Mathematics and Numerical Analysis. A vast variety of courses in all mathematical disciplines – pure and applied mathematics, numerical analysis and mathematical statistics – are available within the programme.

The Master’s programme in Mathematical Statistics provides a broad spectrum of tools and methods for handling random phenomena occurring in scientific as well as industrial contexts. Within the programme, you can specialise in many different areas such as the modelling of economical, biological and environmental data. You study at least 45 credits in mathematical statistics at the Master’s level and write a Master’s thesis of 30 credits. The remaining (at most 45) credits can be used in additional mathematical statistics courses or, for example, mathematics or numerical analysis, as well as in other subjects, for example, computer science, economics, molecular biology and bioinformatics.
