It has the "Polymer Material Application Technology" Hunan Provincial Key Laboratory, the "Advanced Functional Polymer Materials" Hunan Provincial Key Laboratory of Common Universities, and the "Polymer Science and Engineering" Central and local governments jointly build the special advantage subject laboratory platform for universities And "Xiangtan University - Baling Petrochemical" and "Xiangtan University - Times New Materials" two innovative training bases for graduate students in Hunan Province. The major is targeted to train the master candidates skilled in a variety of research teaching and engineering technology and management of Material Science and Engineering，and high-level talents with an innovative spirit.

The discipline of material science and engineering consists of 3 subordinate discipline of master on material science, material processing engineering, and materials physics and chemistry. This discipline aims to study the structure, processing, and properties of one material and investigate the relationships of these factors. The mandatory core courses include material analysis and characterization, selected topics of materials physics and so on. The main research area covers valence electron structure and materials design, the theory and application of material structure control under an external field.
