6 Italian Masters Degree Programs

The Master's Degree Course in "Italian Language and Culture for Foreigners" (acronym MCS) responds to a large demand addressed to the University both by foreign students, who, thanks to the ancient tradition of the University "L'Orientale" and its numerous agreements with European and non-European universities, attend first-level courses, and by Italian students who would like to complete their training for the teaching and dissemination of the Italian language and culture abroad.

The Master's course aims to train teachers of Italian as a second language who are prepared to respond with the most appropriate means to the linguistic needs of different types of audiences: immigrant minors and adults; asylum seekers, refugees and vulnerable migrants; adults with limited literacy; Italian communities scattered across the continents and still eager to maintain a lively relationship with the Italian language and culture; citizens of Europe and the world eager to access Italian culture and art.

Il percorso di Master proposto dall'Istituto di studi italiani presenta una peculiarità del tutto singolare rispetto all'offerta formativa delle altre Università, perché si fonda su un piano di studi costituito da corsi che, ogni anno, si raccolgono attorno a un tema specifico: unità tematica che diviene stimolo e concreta occasione di interdisciplinarità. Esso intende offrire ai suoi studenti l'acquisizione di un maturo diritto di cittadinanza nel dominio della parola, che permetterà loro di interrogare il presente, incamminarsi consapevolmente verso il futuro e, soprattutto, di riconoscere la propria singolarità di persone.

The Department of European Languages and Literatures offers the Master of Arts degree in Italian. The degree leads to teaching careers in secondary education and college, and to admission to doctoral programs in these languages or comparative literature. Courses cover numerous aspects of the literature from the Medieval through the contemporary periods, viewed through various methods of literary criticism.

Drawing on a distinguished history initiated in 1825 by Lorenzo Da Ponte, celebrated librettist of Mozart's operas and first teacher of Italian at Columbia University, the department is known for providing broad coverage of Italian literature and boasts a faculty that represents a diverse spectrum of interests and critical approaches. In addition, students are able to take advantage of the rich cultural and scholarly programs sponsored by the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America. The Paterno Collection, housed in Butler Library, is a unique resource for the study of Italian literature.

The Master's Degree in Teaching of The Italian Language to Foreigners (ITAS) trains participants to be LS/L2 Italian teachers (Italian as a foreign language/second language) and cultural operators, qualified to carry out their activity in public and private schools and universities in Italy and abroad, but also in local institutions and international organizations working towards the inclusion and integration of minors and adult immigrants or the promotion of Italian language and culture in the world.
