35 Islamic Studies Masters Degree Programs

The MA Islamic Humanities explores the social, cultural, and intellectual history, arts, and philosophy of the Islamic world. Using interdisciplinary approaches, it challenges essentialist narratives and highlights diversity. Open to all academic backgrounds, no prior knowledge of Islam or other languages is required.

Offered in a fully online format by Hebrew University’s Rothberg International School (RIS) in conjunction with the Department of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, the M.A. in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies is an intensive, integrated program designed for students who wish to study the religion, politics, society, history, and culture of the Middle East.

Students deploy inter-disciplinary humanities approaches to the Islamic world, and engage seriously with its production in the humanities not as an afterthought to the traditional humanities but as a source of critical insights for a global humanities. Challenging essentialist narratives, the programme fosters an appreciation of diversity – regional, cultural and religio-intellectual – within the Islamic world.

The Master of Arts in Islamic Studies is offered to thought leaders, administrators, educators, or professionals who seek a deeper understanding of the beliefs and values of Islam together with the needs of dominant faith communities that interact with the Christian religion in the Middle East North Africa region.

In this Research Master's Program you will study how religion is embedded in present-day and in historical cultural contexts. You will explore the impact of local and global socio-economic and political developments on religion, and how religion contributes to such developments. A staff member whose research interests in religion matches yours best, will act as your supervisor throughout the Program.

The MA Islamic Studies programme employs a critical and analytical approach to the study of Islam and contemporary Muslim society. The course examines the sources and origins of Islamic thought and practice, in particular the Qur'an and Sunnah, together with a knowledge and understanding of the life of the Prophet Muhammad and its contemporary significance. In addition, it offers a wide range of optional modules that will prepare students to contextualise Islamic Studies and be able to critically analyse contemporary debates and issues concerning Islam and Muslims.

The Masters Program will offer advanced learning in Islamic Studies as well as offer more specialized degree Programs in which students can utilize their Islamic knowledge in conjunction with their other chosen field of studies.
