We offer two Master specializations in the field of History Studies: Applied History, Global History, and International Relations.

The Master of Arts (Thesis) (MA (Thesis))

This one-year MA programme explores Irish and international conflict during the twentieth century—the most violent period in recorded history. Wars have often changed the course of human history, opening up pathways into the future and closing down others. Examining the history of conflict and its impact on society enables us to better understand the world we live in today. Part of the course will also be devoted to the study of conflict resolution, examining the history of diplomacy and negotiation between states. Students will learn about the different ways that historians have approached the study of war and peace, the various sources at their disposal, and the theoretical issues arising within the field.

The Research Master History at Leiden University offers five specialisations in which you will focus on historical processes, historiography and methodology of historical research.

The MA in Classics & Ancient Civilizations offers a broad approach to Antiquity, with the integration of classical languages and ancient cultural history. It seeks to combine the methodologies of History, Art History, and literary studies, integrating them into a reading that addresses the multifaceted processes of production and cultural transmission.

In Groningen, we offer the MA in Classics & Ancient Civilizations: Ancient History as a one-year Master's track -in English- with a full-time and a part-time tangent. While we cover the whole of antiquity, from archaic Greece to the late Roman Empire, our focus lies on the political, cultural, and religious connectivities of the Mediterranean world.

The MA in the Classical Archaeology and the Ancient History of Macedonia Programme is being offered by the School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Economics of the University Center of International Programmes of Studies of the International Hellenic University.

Master of Arts in Historical Studies (2 years) The program provides a systematic introduction to theories, methods, and research skills (including source language training) in a variety of historical disciplines. The program’s location in Vienna and its international faculty provide students with an inspiring setting to study historical change in action and conduct their research on a topic of their choice. Successful graduates will write and defend a thesis of original research based on methodologically rigorous employment of primary sources.

The Master´s degree in Communication as a Historical-Social Agent is a one-year postgraduate program that provides an excellent opportunity to enhance the students´ achievements in their undergraduate course of study by implementing a broad range of interdisciplinary contents that include History, Journalism, Sociology, Audiovisual Communication and Advertising, among many others. All of which come together in this degree to transform students into "multi-profile" professionals in the Social Sciences and the Humanities. It is an official postgraduate program with an original academic approach that combines scientific rigor and professional innovation. This Master´s program is targeted at all those postgraduates who wish to gain deeper insights into Communication-related research methodologies from a variety of standpoints. Because of its commitment to addressing the needs of various professional profiles, it is aimed at both Communication professionals with an interest in research and other graduates in the Humanities and Social Sciences: historians, linguists, philosophers, sociologists or political scientists. The syllabus, designed in this Master´s, therefore, not only tries to situate the media in their respective historical context but also to analyze the media as decisive instruments of historical change and, in a more precise way, as we approach our current days. In sum, this program constitutues a great choice for those graduates who wish to upgrade their CV by receiving specialised training or steer their academic career in the direction of doctoral research.

Within the Institute of History, the Department for Interdisciplinary History has been providing education in the field of cultural heritage since 2012, initially as a specialization of the History MA program, and from 2016 in the form of an independent Hungarian master's degree program. Since 2018, the Department has been coordinating a bilingual (English and French) Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree program on cultural heritage (TEMA+ European Territories. Heritage and Development), in association with four partner universities (Charles University, Prague; École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris; University of Catania; Université Laval, Québec) and in cooperation with European Heritage Label (EHL) and various UNESCO organs. The English-language Cultural Heritage Studies MA program is based on the domestic and international experiences of the department. The program includes two specializations: 1) Theory of Cultural Heritage, 2) Museum and Curatorial Studies. The program provides internships for students in several institutions involved in heritage protection and management.

SOAS’s MA History and Intensive Language programme is one of the few UK Master-level degrees in History which focuses on the histories of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. With its high concentration of expertise of these regions, the programme offers an unrivalled breadth of courses on these regions’ respective as well as interconnected histories. It can also be taken with an intensive language pathway over two years, therefore making this programme unique in Europe.
