The MA in Black British History is an exciting opportunity to study and research the histories of Africans and African-descended peoples in the United Kingdom.

SOAS’s MA History and Intensive Language programme is one of the few UK Master-level degrees in History which focuses on the histories of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. With its high concentration of expertise of these regions, the programme offers an unrivalled breadth of courses on these regions’ respective as well as interconnected histories. It can also be taken with an intensive language pathway over two years, therefore making this programme unique in Europe.

Our European Studies MA course will give you a detailed understanding of the politics, history, economy and societies of Europe. As a full-time student, you may also take either a French or German pathway, which offers you the opportunity to complete a master’s degree within a year while taking modules abroad. Places on these pathways have separate capacity restrictions.

This Masters in the History of the Highlands and Islands is the first-ever taught the postgraduate course to focus on the colourful and often conflict-driven history of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, from medieval times to the 20th century.

King’s contains one of the largest concentrations of medievalists in the UK, bringing together scholars in medieval history, languages, literature and culture, with expertise across Europe and Asia. Our MA in Contemporary British History course will provide you with training in and experience in the historical analysis of issues that are central to understanding contemporary Britain. While we focus on the study of British history over the past century, we also recognise that you can’t understand British history without reference to other countries and regions, in particular the Empire/Commonwealth, Europe and North America.
