The Art and Visual Culture MA is part of the Cultural and Literary Studies Suite, a cluster of four MAs that bring together academics, curators and practitioners who share a commitment to investigating modern and contemporary culture from aesthetic, critical, literary, and experiential perspectives. You'll share classes with students from the Cultural and Critical Studies MA, the English Literature: Modern and Contemporary Fictions MA, and the Museum, Galleries and Contemporary Culture MA, joining a fruitful and intellectually-rigorous environment designed to facilitate the sprouting of interdisciplinary thinking. As part of our Suite, you may also choose an option module from the other three MA programmes (what is referred to as an ‘elective’ module), a fantastic opportunity to explore a facet of culture outside of your chosen MA programme. The Art and Visual Culture MA is an interdisciplinary, visual theory-based course established around the belief that visual literacy and the impact of visual forms of thinking and working play significant roles in our society. In the course, we interrogate visual perception and representation in high and popular culture, explore how these produce meanings, and how such meanings shape societies and individuals.

Emerson College’s on-campus MFA in Film and Media Art equips you with the skills to explore narrative film, documentary, experimental media, installation art, and interactive media. Collaborating with a diverse group of students and faculty on our Boston campus, you will enhance your knowledge of film, audio, video, and interactive media production. The program encourages you to use image and sound to challenge, inform, entertain, and persuade through both traditional and emerging media forms. Housed in the Department of Visual and Media Arts within the School of the Arts, this program offers three distinct entry points based on your experience and ranges from two to three years in length. This flexibility allows students from various backgrounds to inspire each other’s artistic growth. Upon admission, we will work with you to develop a personalized study plan aligned with your professional and educational goals.

The MFA in Animation & Visual Effects program focuses on developing skills in any one of the many areas of expertise within the animation and visual effects industry. The program educates students in all aspects of animation and visual effects, from ideation to post-production. Communication, collaboration, and time management skills are emphasized throughout the program to ensure graduates are acclimated to the intense professional culture that awaits them.

The MA in Fine Arts can be completed with an emphasis in Drawing and Painting. This degree program provides students with the creative and technical skills needed to thrive in today’s art world. Students will leave with professional-level portfolios and an understanding of the business of art.

The Master of Fine Art program provides students a framework for advanced study in drawing and painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Students are focused on technical and conceptual development in figurative, abstract, or landscape work. The MPhil (Fine Art) is a practice-based postgraduate research programme. The aim of the programme is the generation of a contribution to knowledge and understanding in the discipline of Fine Art.

This studio-based MA Fine Art course allows you to develop your creative potential in a cross-disciplinary environment, using specialist equipment and drawing on the expertise of practicing artists and skilled technicians at our Locksbrook campus. Working with students from across the Bath School of Art, Film and Media, and School of Design, you’ll study a range of approaches including painting, sculpture, live art, and photography, to further your skills and knowledge in your specialist area. You’ll identify your position as an artist, develop the appropriate technical skills, and learn how to promote and exhibit your work professionally.

MA Fine Art is practice driven and focussed on the development of your existing practice. It will enable you to identify and explore new concepts and approaches negotiated through an individual Working Synopsis.

The three-year international Master in Fine Arts (iMFA) program under the guidance of the Institute of Radio, Film, and Television, equips students with practical skills like script writing, film and television production, and new media audio-visual editing. Our students will take academic and practice-based courses with faculty members from CMIC, while having the opportunity to choose business-related courses at ZIBS.
