The PPGEM - Graduate Program in Mineral Engineering aims at academic training at Master and Doctorate levels, qualifying graduates in the fundamentals and applications of Mineral Engineering, preparing them for the exercise of activities both in educational institutions and / or research as directly with the production system. The courses are accredited by CAPES. The Master in Mineral Engineering started its activities in March 1998 and the Doctorate in 2015; both provide training in two areas of concentration: Lavra de Minas and Mineral Treatment. The professional trained by this program must have a critical view in relation to sustainable development and its applications. The research work that has been developed has a strong support from companies, in the region and beyond, due to its immediate application in the resolution of mining engineering problems.

The Master's Degree in Engineering under the modality of deepening prioritizes within its differentiating factor the strengthening of professionals linked in the agricultural and agro-industrial sector for the generation of innovative ideas and that, by virtue of the expansion of knowledge on topics such as food safety, engineering of bioprocesses and sustainable logistics, be driving the development of the field and contribute to the reduction of poverty of rural populations. The Master in Engineering of Land Roads is a deepening of the specific knowledge inroads of the Civil or Transportation Engineer, from the point of view of planning, design, construction, and maintenance, applying new procedures and technologies to provide road safety to the user, achieve a longer useful life of the roads and lower investment and operating costs. The program is offered in two modalities: The professionalizing master's degree and the investigative master's degree, which are differentiated by the scope and individual dedication to the research project.

The Graduate Program in Mineral Engineering (PPGEMin) encompasses strictu sensu graduate courses at the Academic Master and Doctorate levels and has regular and special students. The main objectives of the Program are: Train high-level professionals to work in teaching, research, or technological development, within the scope of Mineral Engineering; Conduct scientific and technological research of an innovative nature, reflected in the production of knowledge linked to Brazilian needs; Contribute to the sustainability of mineral-based extractive industries, by generating and evaluating technologies and procedures that minimize adverse environmental and social impacts and maximize positive contributions; Dialogue and develop partnerships with the private sector, with governmental and third sector organizations, seeking to contribute to making the Brazilian mineral-based extractive industry more competitive, productive and sustainable; Contribute to a greater insertion of USP and the Polytechnic School in the international scientific and technological community, through cooperation agreements, personnel exchange, participation in examining boards, organization of technical-scientific events, performance in editorial boards of journals, and other initiatives. The Academic Master's program aims at mastering and carrying out technical-scientific work that demonstrates the ability to systematize the existing literature on the treated topic and the ability to use scientific and technological research methods and techniques. The Doctorate aims at mastering and carrying out technical-scientific research work that represents an original contribution to the state of the art of the treated topic.
