24 Dispute Resolution Masters Degree Programs

The Master of Arts Degree in International Law and the Settlement of Disputes (face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats) offers students an understanding of the role that international law and institutions play in the settlement of international and transnational disputes. This specialization examines the role of national and international courts and tribunals in contributing to the settlement of disputes. As international and transnational adjudication has acquired a more prominent role in international relations, it is essential to understand how these global and regional courts are responding to the challenges of the early 21st Century. Students will examine the role of law in traditional and not-so traditional territorial and boundary disputes, and acquire an overview of the law of the sea. And finally, they will be examine the increasingly important field of dispute settlement in international economic relations, which will include investment arbitration.

The LL.M. degree program consists of 24 credits hours of study and can normally be completed in a year, although a part-time option is available for domestic students in the LL.M. in Dispute Resolution program.

The LLM programme provides students with a thorough understanding of procedural law and supports further education, enabling them to gain specialist knowledge, skills, and expertise in areas such as criminal procedure, civil procedure, and the law of evidence. 

The course is intended for anyone wishing to demonstrate a commitment to contentious law in public and private international and commercial legal contexts. The taught part of the programme includes modules which reflect the three main forms of the dispute resolution process, namely adjudication (litigation and arbitration), alternative dispute resolution (ADR – principally mediation), and negotiation.

The International Dispute Resolution programme has been designed in response to the growing demand for legal education within the dispute resolution setting. The course covers extensive detail areas such as arbitration, international dispute settlement, dispute resolution procedure, and investment arbitration. The modules not only focus on the core aspects of dispute resolution, it also encompasses the growing area of investment law and investment arbitration.

The MA is a unique and innovative interdisciplinary programme that provides students with the academic knowledge and practical skills to resolve disputes between parties in a non-adversarial manner. Upon successful completion of the MA, students receive a QQI Level 9 academic qualification.
