The School of International Chinese Studies at East China Normal University accepts applications from international students interested in pursuing a 3-year research-oriented program for a Master degree in Literature. The program is based on ECNU’s main campus in Shanghai. Our program focus is on Chinese literature and culture, and we encourage comparative studies between China and other cultures as we strongly believe that literary and cultural dialogue is very necessary for the world.

Do you already have an undergraduate major in Chinese and would like to continue your study in the field? The M.A. program in Chinese at HLS provides a more specialized focus, allowing students to gain a more complex understanding of Chinese language and culture. While many students in the master’s program plan to pursue a Ph.D. in Chinese, the M.A. is also appropriate for those in nonacademic careers where a deep familiarity with more than one East Asian language is necessary.

The graduate program at Osaka University is relatively new, and there may be areas where organization and facilities could be improved—after all, it is a new department. Nevertheless, the department offers an intimate, convivial atmosphere where students receive thorough instruction from their teachers and senior students. With an emphasis on the development of language proficiency, a critical approach to source materials, and a vibrant, open atmosphere in which students are given the freedom to choose what they want to research; the faculty operates a culture of free exchange that transcends age and topics, inside and outside its walls.

The objective of this specialty program is to produce a new, creative type of talented person who has physical and psychological well-being and with full development of morality, wisdom, physique and aesthetics, who has a good moral character and professional quality, and is a law-abiding citizen.
