The aim of the proposed graduate research program Environmental Analytical Chemistry and Microbiology (EACM) is to form experts with up-to-date knowledge of advanced analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, molecular biology, and environmental microbiology to elucidate the behavior and fate of contaminants from pollution sources to living organisms, to assess their impacts on ecosystem structure and functioning, and to implement solutions to maintain ecosystems health.

Strongly increasing societal demand in the fields of Environment, Sustainable Development and Health, implies a synergy of advanced skills in Chemistry and Biology Sciences. In order to be able to effectively respond to this demand and to implement innovative solutions providing efficient answers to these requests, it is essential to perfectly understand the interaction of contaminants with living organisms and particularly their structures, properties, reactivities/activities in natural ecosystems.

Chemistry is a science that can be used to resolve many of the challenges faced by society today, from health issues to sustainable development. This program has been designed to provide students with cutting-edge knowledge in chemistry to be equipped to meet these challenges. The program builds strong expertise in many different fields of chemistry including organic, organometallic, supramolecular, solid-state, and inorganic.

Increasing concern over issues on food and uses of natural products in the Mediterranean area has formed the basis for a Master’s of Science (M.Sc.) degree on “Food Quality and Chemistry of Natural Products”. The programme is chemistry oriented and aims at the specialisation of students in Food Quality concepts, Food Authenticity, various aspects of Natural Product Chemistry, and at the valorisation of Agrifood Renewable Sources for added value products. The postgraduate programme promotes expertise on quality control and various natural product applications as well as on high technology up-to-date laboratory instrumentation of analytical and preparative scope. The attainment of the M.Sc. degree qualifies them to successfully continue their doctorate studies and/or pursue an expert’s career in both the public and private sector.

The courses aim to provide theoretical, methodological, and technical knowledge of organic and analytical chemistry, allowing students to approach the research and development of projects in conditions favourable to the development of imagination, autonomy, and acute senses and convenience.
