Explore the depths of the universe through multidisciplinary research as you dive into an area that most interests you, whether it be general relativity, theoretical astrophysics, observational or instrumentation development, or another area related to astrophysics.

The program provides a broad choice of activities including hands-on sessions at the in-house optical telescope, data analysis of observations taken from the best instruments available at top facilities, high-performance numerical simulations of complex astrophysical systems and advanced classes in the new field of gravitational wave astrophysics.

During the four semesters of their studies, students will have hands-on instruction in parallel computing methods for scientific applications, computational optimisation approaches and artificial intelligence as compulsory courses. In addition, they can choose from a range of theoretical physics and astrophysics courses, which include mathematical modelling, non-local mathematical physics, physical kinetics, spectrometry, data mining, star atmospheres, advanced statistical physics, response theory, cosmology, quantum theory of atoms and molecules, quantum information, low-temperature physics, quantum thermodynamics and the physics of galaxies. For, every semester students join research groups for practice and to gain experience in research.

This degree is one of five tracks in the professional master’s program at Rice housed in the Wiess School of Natural Sciences and focuses on training students in Space Engineering and Science with the intent of creating new options for those students interested in working in the space technology industry or related government entities, e.g. NASA, as well as governmental relations positions in non-profit organizations, industry and academic institutions. Applications for this master's degree programme can be submitted once a year in January, and once accepted, your studies will begin in September. From this programme, you will graduate with a Master of Science degree.
