The Contemporary Art and the Moving Image MA is a collaborative master's degree offered jointly by King’s College London and the Courtauld Institute of Art. This innovative course explores the past and present of visual culture and the moving image in art.

Each student’s primary discipline and chosen emphasis among art, design, or media practice and theoretical inquiry will determine whether the degree earned is an MFA, MDes, or MA. This Master´s Degree constitutes an innovative proposal aimed at deepening research methods in literary and philological studies, with special emphasis on the interdisciplinary relations of these studies with other arts (cinema, plastic arts, music and performing arts) and with other sciences and disciplines (anthropology, rhetoric, ecdotics or palaeography). The fundamental contents belong to the areas of Spanish Literature and Literary Theory and Comparative Literature, with an educational offer that includes other subjects that may also be of interest to students of Cinema, Art, History, Anthropology or Music.

The two-year Master's track in Arts, Media and Literary Studies is a specialization within the Research Master's degree in Arts and Culture. Arts, Media and Literary Studies equips students with knowledge and skills to become researchers and experts on the role that the arts, literature and media play in society, now and in the past. The programme offers a rich multi- and interdisciplinary framework within which students can specialize in one of the following disciplines or combinations of disciplines, under close supervision of a highly qualified research faculty:

In the two-year Research Master's degree in Arts and Culture, you can choose between two tracks. The track in Literary and Cultural Studies offers you an advanced study of the arts. You will focus specifically on the role the arts play in processes of cultural change. Also, you will specialize in one of the involved art forms: literature, film, theatre, music or multimedia forms.

Contemporary Art Practice (CAP) at the Royal College of Art is a cutting-edge MA programme in the School of Arts & Humanities that is driven by a post-medium, critical approach to the making and reception of art, where theory and practice come together to form new ways of responding to the contemporary world. The programme supports the development of your art practice within a responsive, dialogical and critical context with an emphasis on wider political issues – interrogating art production in relation to urgent socio-political contexts as well as questioning and redefining practice.

The interdisciplinary Arts, Cognition and Criticism track focuses on how culture is transmitted, innovated and critiqued through the arts, with course topics such as the arts and reflective imagination; value-negotiation through storytelling; or social and political functions of the arts. Students are trained in methods from the cognitive sciences, hermeneutics, narrative and critical theory, discourse analysis and art sociology. They develop a keen theory-based insight into the role of the arts in cultural dynamics, and hands-on capacities for critical analysis and interpretation of art-works, debates and developments in the arts, in connection to their social background.

The MA in Classical Art and Archaeology course offers you the opportunity to study Greek and Roman art and archaeology at one of the largest Classics departments in the UK. The course is intercollegiate with options taught at King’s, UCL and Royal Holloway and you can take advantage of our close links to the Institute of Classical Studies, one of the UK’s best Classical libraries.

Visual Arts is a follow-up postgraduate program that combines practical studio-based seminars and workshops with theoretical lectures on art theory and history.

The Arts and humanities is a dynamic interplay between theory and practice. The School provides expert supervision across the spectrum of art and writing practice, art and design history and theory, curating, and criticism. We welcome proposals for theoretical and practice-led projects, industrial collaborations, and technologically focused research.

The MRes in Arts and Humanities is a research preparation degree that offers students the opportunity to undertake advanced studies within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at Queen’s.

The MAVA has been designed to ensure that it supports students in developing the required level of competence to exit with research in specialized areas of visual art a master’s qualification. Students conduct practice, photography, video and new media art, environmental art and related theories, art history, theory and criticism, art education, art therapy, and socially engaged art as well as collaborative art practice. Students are expected to investigate complex analytical and practical skills through the writing of a dissertation and/or professional practice through having or curating an exhibition, or engaging in community-based research to advance knowledge appropriate to the research mode.
