Research Degrees (MPhil/PhD) in History of Art and/or Archaeology undertaking a research degree is an intense and personally rewarding experience. A full-time doctoral student has three years to complete a full draft of their thesis and then a further one year for writing up (known as a 3+1 degree).

The Master of Research (MRes Arts) is a qualification specifically aimed at makers, designers and thinkers who wish to undertake an independent, critical and creative study within and across the disciplines offered by the university. Our Master of Research (MRes Arts) programme aims to develop your research skills and provide a good preparation for doctoral study. We provide an opportunity for individuals from a range of creative and academic backgrounds to gain a critical appreciation of maker cultures to advance innovative research practices in the arts.

The MA in History and Theory of Art and Architecture (MSTAA) includes the study of the history of both architecture and art. It is a complete Master which aims at counteracting the growing marginalisation of architecture in art history studies. At the same time, the study of the history of art and architecture in different eras (medieval, modern and contemporary) is complemented by in-depth studies on the theory and criticism of architecture, artistic literature, the history and practice of restoration (with moments of practice in the field), museology and digital humanities with an eye towards other artistic and cultural expressions like photography, cinema, theatre, and literature. Practical workshops and internships in affiliated institutions complete the Master's training offer.

The Master of Arts (MA) in Interior Design is a one-year program aimed at emerging designers and conceived to provide them with the necessary tools and skills to become professionals in this field. This program prepares students to meet the demands of an expanding high-end residential and commercial property market in capital cities around the world.

The Art History MA degree is designed to give students an advanced understanding of western art history. The program offers specializations in ancient art, medieval art, renaissance art, baroque art, 18th and 19th-century art, and pre-war modern art. The art historical curriculum is paired with six credits of fine art studio classes, which allow our students to become familiar with traditional methods of fine art production including painting, printmaking, and sculpture. This marriage of art history and fine art studies offers a perspective through which art and its historical trajectory can be uniquely evaluated and appreciated. Students will complete their degree by writing an M.A. thesis, with the support and advisement of an Art History faculty member. The thesis will be written in the student's chosen area of art historical specialization demonstrating independent scholarly research and highlighting their joint understanding of art and its creative process.

The MA History of Art and Archaeology of East Asia and Intensive Language is a two-year programme, combining the strengths of the MA History of Art and Archaeology of East Asia with intensive language training in Chinese, Japanese or Korean. You will study the arts of China, Korea and Japan, exploring a wide range of East Asian arts and material culture, from Chinese archaeology to Japanese prints, Korean installation works to Buddhist monuments, in historical and contemporary periods.

The Master of Arts in Management programme is for managers who wish to pursue studies at a higher level by adding a specialisation. Students build on their knowledge from the work environment and previous learning, whilst developing a critical theoretical perspective which will inform their own developing Management practice.

The MA in Arts and Culture: Art History is a unique curatorial program, with a combination of historical and theoretical depth. The faculty of our masters is specialized in the fields of Italian Renaissance and Baroque art, Northern Renaissance and Baroque art, including pre-modern globalization, the art of the Enlightenment, twentieth-century art, art criticism, new media, and materials and techniques.

In the two-year Research Master's degree in Arts and Culture, you can choose between two tracks. The track in Literary and Cultural Studies offers you an advanced study of the arts. You will focus specifically on the role the arts play in processes of cultural change. Also, you will specialize in one of the involved art forms: literature, film, theatre, music or multimedia forms.
