The MA Islamic Humanities at SOAS is a professional and research-focused program requiring 120 credits of taught modules and a 10,000-word dissertation. The MA in Japanese Studies and Intensive Language is a 2-year full-time (or four-year part-time) programme. This MA is designed to provide intensive language training at different proficiency levels - depending on entry level - within a master's programme in Japanese Studies. Master transferable language and analytical skills in order to prepare for a variety of potential future professional or research careers.

The MA in Korean Studies and Intensive Language is a 2-year full-time (or 4-year part-time) programme. It is designed to provide Intensive Language training at different proficiency levels - depending on entry level - within a master's programme in Korean Studies. The MA in Korean Studies and Intensive Language allows students to Cultivate or further develop a basic expertise in particular aspects of Korean Studies

Our European Studies MA course will give you a detailed understanding of the politics, history, economy and societies of Europe. As a full-time student, you may also take either a French or German pathway, which offers you the opportunity to complete a master’s degree within a year while taking modules abroad. Places on these pathways have separate capacity restrictions.

The Creative Writing: Writing the City MA is the only Creative Writing MA course to focus entirely on the city of London. It will allow you to explore the city as a subject matter from a range of perspectives and across all genres. It will also give you a theoretical and practical platform from which to develop your understanding and become part of the London writing scene. Taught by professional writers and researchers, our course offers plenty of opportunities to network with other writers, agents, TV producers and performance poets. As part of the MA, you'll be part of the team managing the Wells Street Journal, our student-led in-house magazine. You'll be based in the University's headquarters building at 309 Regent Street, which means you'll be writing about the city in the heart of London, with ready access to the capital's excellent academic, social and cultural opportunities, including the vibrant West End theatre scene. You can begin in January or in September. To receive your Master's award, you'll need to complete taught modules for a total of 120 credits, covered by three 40-credit core modules, and the 60-credit Writing Project (giving a total of 180 credits). The workshop-based structure of the course will allow you to learn through interactive practice. Classes are weekly and normally last two or three hours. Teaching will also include visits to selected London institutions to support certain aspects of writing, and you'll be encouraged to use various archives, theatres and galleries. Assessment methods include coursework portfolios, reflective logs, essays, and workshop leader, as well as the 10-12,000-word writing project. There are no formal exams.

In MA Japanese Studies (Dual Degree Programme) the Department of Japan and Korea at SOAS University of London and Sophia University's Graduate Program in Global Studies (GPGS) have launched this Dual Degree Programme (DDP) which allows students to benefit from the combined resources of two of the world's leading institutions in Japanese Studies, located in two major global cities – Tokyo and London.

The Urban and Regional Planning MA will give you the skills, knowledge and abilities necessary to practise professionally as a spatial planner in a variety of private, public and third sector/ community contexts. In addition to the MA qualification, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate options are also available, enabling you to access the course at a point that is relevant to your circumstances, achieve credits and leave at a point that specifically meets your needs.

The World History & Cultures MA offers a deep dive into global interactions and transnational histories across continents. You can study topics like empires or focus on specific regions. King’s contains one of the largest concentrations of medievalists in the UK, bringing together scholars in medieval history, languages, literature and culture, with expertise across Europe and Asia. MA Iranian Studies and Intensive Language is a unique programme, run by very few universities worldwide. At SOAS, you’ll have the benefit of studying in the centre of London, have the opportunity to learn Persian and other Middle Eastern languages, and link with research centres such as the Centre for Iranian Studies and the Centre for Middle Eastern Studies.

Our MA in Contemporary British History course will provide you with training in and experience in the historical analysis of issues that are central to understanding contemporary Britain. While we focus on the study of British history over the past century, we also recognise that you can’t understand British history without reference to other countries and regions, in particular the Empire/Commonwealth, Europe and North America.
