In the GW Master of Arts in Sociology program, students focus on social stratification and inequality while honing their skills in sociological theory and research methods. Students develop specific expertise in their chosen major and minor fields, with elective options including Race and Urban Development; Principles of Demography; and Race, Gender and Class. Students also have the option to complete criminology courses as electives for the MA in Sociology.

Sociologists examine the taken-for-granted “facts” of society, often exposing unsavoury and under-investigated parts of contemporary social life. NTU Sociology provides research training through full-time and part-time M.A. and PhD by research, designed to give you the academic training needed to pursue your interests and produce rigorous social science. 

The course aims to equip students with the skills necessary to engage with contemporary theoretical, policy and practice-related issues relating to work and study with young people in the national and international context of community regeneration; the course offers a critical forum where the complexities of social regeneration can be addressed; it builds upon existing research and teaching strengths at undergraduate and postgraduate levels within the Department of Sociology, namely inequality and social exclusion; the welfare state; social change; youth and community, social regeneration and sociological research methods; the program also offers the possibility of taking elective modules at NUIG and at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick (MIC).

Shiv Nadar IoE-SOAS Joint MA Global Urban Sociology jointly taught MA between SOAS and Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence (Shiv Nadar IoE) in Delhi is one of the only programmes to focus on global sociology and specifically on the global sociology of cities and urban life-worlds.

The Two Year MA aims to present students with a wide range of theories and methods in sociology and social anthropology while examining their interaction and integration in the study of globalization and urban studies. The study of globalization and urban studies is conceived in the department as both a material and a formal object.

Two-year MA program in Sociology and Social Anthropology with optional specialization in Global and Urban Studies. The Two-Year MA requires that students take a total of 62 credits, of these 48 credits in coursework. (14 credits for the Thesis Consultation and Defense are not included in the required 62 credits!) In the first year, a minimum of 30 credits is to be undertaken. A further 18 credits may be taken in the second year.

The joint MA by SOAS and Shiv Nadar University focuses on global sociology, emphasizing urban life-worlds. Combining academic and policy insights, it uses global case studies to explore theoretical frameworks. Students benefit from cultural immersion in the UK and India, with core courses and a dissertation.

Student access will be considered for a student who is in possession of a university-based Honours qualification in Sociology/Industrial Sociology on NQF Level 7. If a student does not comply with the requirements mentioned above, admission may be granted by the Dean of the Faculty, at the recommendation of the Chairperson of the Department.

This program provides knowledge in the present-day field of sociology and social anthropology, including both theory and research methods. There are three specialisations: Civil Society and Politics, Anthropology of Space and Mobility, Identities, Health and Bodies or a double degree in Sociology of Contemporary Societies with the University of Florence. You can find employment in the education sector, state and public administration, the nonprofit sector, corporate organisations, or academia.

In coursework mode the candidate should successfully complete the advanced course in Social Theory, the advanced course in Social Research Methodology, and complete research and write a minor dissertation on an approved, relevant topic. In research mode, the candidate should complete research and write a dissertation on an approved, relevant topic.

The course focus is on sociological research methods, and the intention is to produce graduates ready to embark on research careers in the private, public, voluntary or academic spheres; modules on qualitative and quantitative methods form the core of the course, along with modules on substantive issues of contemporary relevance; computer-aided analysis of qualitative data, and statistical analysis of large-scale survey data sets is central to the course.
