Social anthropology is the study of people, cultures and societies around the world. It takes cultures on their own terms and values the importance of culture to helping us understand the world we live in. Social Anthropology gives us the tools that we need to understand human cultural and social differences and to really start to make sense of how people, groups and organisations think about the world.

Located within the School of Global Studies, which has a strong tradition of socially and politically engaged anthropology focusing on real-world issues. This MA is for you if you want to deepen your knowledge of anthropology – but it also offers professional training if you’re new to the field.

Immerse yourself in the study of people and their cultural behaviors, past and present, with Monmouth University’s Master of Arts in Anthropology degree. This comprehensive, 30-credit program is grounded in method and theory and provides extensive opportunities for fieldwork and internships in archaeology, cultural anthropology, cultural resource management, geographic information systems (GIS), historic preservation, and many other areas, giving you essential hands-on experience and preparing you for a career or doctoral study in anthropology.

Anthropology is dedicated to documenting and understanding human beings. It takes as its starting proposition that we can only reach such an understanding by studying people wherever and whenever they have occurred and from both a cultural and biological perspective.

We bring together scholars and activists to engage in co-learning, inspired by a long and beautiful history of education developed in popular universities, modern schools, universities of earth and without walls, and free schools. Our learning community is a convivial space where we collectively consider social movement histories and create a shared understanding of how to influence the movements we are a part of. Our graduates are trained for professional careers in academia, policy, social-political journalism, advocacy, and community, legal, and environmental organizations. Our faculty have a wide range of research interests, among them urban social movements, agri-food studies, politics and filmmaking, post-structuralist philosophy, gender equality, forced migration and refugees, radical oral history, and psychoanalytic time.
