The Master in Fine Arts is the natural continuation of the Bachelor of Arts in Painting and Visual Arts and Sculpture and Installations. Nevertheless, it may also be attended by students who come from other educational backgrounds and who wish to complete their studies by studying contemporary art.

A student in the field of Painting, during his studies, acquires knowledge of the history of painting as well as knowledge of contemporary art and culture.

This program is comprised of oil painting and Japanese painting. For oil painting, students strive to enhance their experience in advanced artistic expression, focusing on canvas painting, printmaking, photo, installation, and performance art. For Japanese painting, students aim for expertise in materials and techniques as well as the study of diverse artistic expressions. Furthermore, special training classes with multiple and diversified studies approaches for materials and techniques serve to enhance the evolution of formative arts.

The core of Laguna College of Art + Design’s MFA program in Painting is built on the values of time-honored skills informed by contemporary theory and designed to help you realize the ideas possible through representational modes of painting and drawing. Our curriculum recognizes that there are particularly technical, ideational, and formal issues related to representation that require you to undergo specialized study at the graduate level, and we strive to meet these demands with a faculty and a curriculum tailored to your needs. The primary goal of the MFA program in Painting is to support you in building on the traditional skills you acquired in your undergraduate studies so that you may realize ideas possible in the discipline of representational art. You will achieve this goal through the creation of a coherent body of work, a written thesis, and a thesis exhibition. Additionally, you will gain insights into the presentation and marketing of your work and will be educated in the logistics of teaching art at the college level.

The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Studio Art is a 30 credit hour, two-year program for artists. Students complete 15 credit hours of graduate-level coursework in various studio art areas such as graphic design, drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, ceramics, and sculpture (3D studies).

The MA Painting programme enables you to examine key issues in contemporary painting in how methods and materials shape an agenda in contemporary painting, whilst developing a critical relationship to its tradition. The programme is centred around the development of your painting practice, and how it will encompass a range of diverse approaches to painting, encouraging you to experiment across different disciplines as your research develops and grows.
