Our MA Legal Studies (General Programme) allows students to study at our vibrant School of Law with its unique focus on the legal systems and legal challenges of the Global South generally and Asia, Africa and the Middle East in particular. The programme allows students to create their programme structure, choosing modules from a range covering comparative regional law, trade law, law and development, commercial law (including copyright and patent law), human rights, environmental law, Islamic law, dispute resolution, and international law.

The MA Gender Studies and Law at SOAS is a unique programme, its principal aim being to re-focus issues prioritised in western Gender Studies and Legal Theory on the complex specificities of Asia, Africa and the Near and Middle East. Jointly housed by the Centre for Gender Studies and the School of Law, the programme offers the specialised study of gender and law in relation to the cultures of Asia, Africa and the Middle East, together with rigorous training in, and questioning of, contemporary gender theory.

The MA Law is designed for students with an undergraduate degree in any discipline who aspire to pursue a legal career. It is similar to a ‘Graduate LLB’ or a 'Law Conversion Course (GDL)' but studied over two years providing a greater depth of study and comprehensive legal grounding. Students who have completed this programme can proceed to the professional stage of legal training with the advantage of gaining a postgraduate law degree.

This course offers you the opportunity to gain a Masters in Law so you’re prepared for many different career options. This degree focuses on the key areas of the law in England and Wales and provides a solid foundation for preparing for the first stage of the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE), paving the way for a number of career options including qualifying as a solicitor, qualifying as a barrister, undertaking legal research, undertaking further study.

The aim of this programme is for students to gain academic and intellectual progression in a number of areas of law and criminal justice, together with the acquisition of specific knowledge and skills. Within the context of the University's mission statement and responsiveness to national and international needs, curriculum innovation and continuous quality enhancement, the programme objectives are to provide students with the knowledge and critical analysis of key themes of law and criminal justice; provide advanced legal knowledge and skills directly relevant to law and criminal justice through the delivery of intellectually stimulating course content underpinned in many areas by internationally recognised research; provide critical analysis of the complexities arising in the fields of law and criminal justice using challenging and informing global and comparative perspectives. The course is underpinned by the significance of engagement with existing and emerging research and advanced scholarship. Develop originality in the application of knowledge, together with a practical understanding of how established techniques of research and enquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in the discipline.
