The Japanese Literature program offers an all-encompassing education in the literature of Japan, from the ancient to the medieval and early modern as well as modern and contemporary. The course involves detailed readings of individual works and suggests various ways to approach different authors and the prevailing trends of different eras, resulting in significant findings. Members of the faculty include Professor Iikura Yōichi (early modern literature), Associate Professor Saitō Masao (modern and contemporary literature), and Associate Professor Seta Michio (medieval literature).

This course looks at literature from Japan and around the world to provide students with a wide range of perspectives and explore the links between the internal and external (“environmental”) worlds of an artistic work through a multifaceted approach incorporating natural, human, and cultural environments in pursuit of the issues that transcend boundaries. Important components of the process include reading texts within the context of their contemporary societies, cultures, and norms; questioning media announcing their publication; and considering the relationships between texts and other genres, such as art, theater, and film.

The Graduate School of Christian Studies was established in April 2009 to significantly expand the Graduate School of Arts’ Program in Systematic Theology. Christianity at Rikkyo University inherits the traditions of the Anglican Church, but the Graduate School of Christian Studies does not restrict itself to particular denominations or faiths, instead of taking an ecumenical stance with an emphasis on the academic, multifaceted analysis and research of matters surrounding Christianity. A distinguishing feature of this program is that in addition to traditional academic approaches such as Bible Studies, Biblical Archaeology, Church History, Systematic Theology, Religious Studies, and the History of Christian Music and Art, there are also numerous practical skill subjects in which students can engage in Field Studies and Service Learning or Church Music such as organ performance and choral conducting. In this way, we aim to study Christianity in contact with real society, not just within the University or seminar rooms. The Graduate School of Christian Studies serves a major role within Rikkyo University as a center of research and education that relates to our founding principles and has twelve full-time faculty members providing research guidance. Through earnest research and passionate education, we explore the possibilities of twenty-first-century Christian Studies as a field that responds to the needs of modern society. Conscious of the global arena, we aim to develop the center for Christian Studies into a leading research institution for Christian Studies in Japan and East Asia.

Energetic researchers in various fields of economics educate and inspire students on a one-to-one basis. The Department of Economics is divided into the master's course (M.A.) and the doctoral (Ph.D.) course. Both allow students to conduct research on the theory and applied areas of economics. During the M.A., students accrue knowledge from a wide perspective and nurture abilities necessary for conducting research on economics or pursuing professional occupations. In the doctoral course, students nurture their ability and the knowledge necessary for conducting advanced research activities in the field of economics.

Although the archaeology program, which was established in 1988, is relatively new, its faculty have a wealth of research and education experience from the “old days” of the national history faculty. The faculty has two full-time members: Professor Shinya Fukunaga and Professor Teruhiko Takahashi. Japanese archaeology is the focus of research and study, but the course also offers faculty members and graduate students various opportunities to conduct fieldwork surveys overseas and to explore a wide range of comparative archaeological perspectives.

In the German Literature Program, students analyze German literary works from the perspective of historical cultural phenomena in central and eastern Europe, where German has played a longstanding role as the common language. In other words, literary works should be analyzed in relation to associated research areas such as cultural history, art history, medical history, and media history. Through various seminars and lectures provided by the department, students acquire advanced language skills (German and English) to understand texts and contemporary research results.

The French Literature program is dedicated to French literary texts spanning all genres, novel, poetry, plays, philosophy, and criticism, from the medieval to the modern age. The course offers practical and creative educational activities that capture the range of rich meaning within these genres based on a broad spread of research encompassing the long traditions of literature, art, cultural and social events. Our department publishes the internationally renowned journal Gallia and hosts research conferences twice a year.

As progress in transportation and communications has led to the “shrinking” of time and space and increased contact between people, human coexistence has become one of the pressing issues of our time. This course comprises a multifaceted exploration of the diversity of relations between different groups of people, from contact and negotiation to the development of complex relations involving conflict, compromise, and segregation, investigating the history and formation of the mechanisms behind them.

In an increasingly international modern society where IT is constantly expanding into new areas, the role of language is assuming ever greater importance. A proper understanding of the status of languages in our diverse, modern society—languages that are themselves transforming—will require students to think about language from a wider, comprehensive perspective with a flexible approach not previously adopted in linguistic research methods.
