This course provides you with a detailed understanding of the nature of the contemporary security agenda, its origins, theoretical foundations and future trajectory. You will examine the theories of international security and those key security issues that have dominated security discourse in the post-Cold War era. You will also develop your analytical skills in order to facilitate understanding of the seminal contemporary security issues in a broader theoretical and historical framework.

This Conflict, Security and Development MA is a unique, globally recognised course that does the opposite. It takes a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to teach you the dynamic ways in which conflict, insecurity and development interact, and help you develop a full understanding of these issues.

Moreover, the legacy of 9/11, the rise of groups like ISIS in Syria and Iraq, and the emergence of far-right groups in the West have brought questions about the nature, evolution, causes, and consequences of non-state political violence to the forefront of academic, policymaking, media, and popular debates. Similarly, security responses to these challenges feature prominently in global politics.

The Global Governance, Politics, and Security (GGPS) program provides students with the knowledge and analytical skills for meaningful careers in international affairs and public service. The program incorporates primary and secondary specializations in global security; multilateral diplomacy and global governance; states, society, and politics; or international economic policy.

The STEM-designated Global Governance, Politics, and Security: Quantitative Economic Methods (GGPS:QEM) master's degree program is where advanced economic and quantitative training meets real-world international policy challenges. Our mission is to train students to apply quantitative methodologies to global issues, developing more data and economics skills than a traditional international affairs degree.
