The MA in Japanese Studies at SOAS is the most comprehensive available anywhere in Europe. You are able to choose modules that cover Japan’s history from the pre-modern era to the present, and range over the social and political sciences as well as humanities. The MA Islamic Humanities at SOAS is a professional and research-focused program requiring 120 credits of taught modules and a 10,000-word dissertation. Lincoln has a long and fascinating history. With its medieval castle, world-renowned Gothic cathedral, and some of the finest surviving examples of medieval domestic architecture in the United Kingdom, the city is home to a wealth of medieval resources, making it an ideal location in which to undertake an advanced study of the Middle Ages.

This MA is taught within the School of Writing, Publishing, and the Humanities, in collaboration with the Research Centre for Environmental Humanities. On this pioneering course, you’ll acquire new research skills, as well as a more holistic understanding of environmental issues. You’ll address specific issues such as climate change and biodiversity loss, alongside broader ideas about human relationships with place, technology, and the more-than-human world, drawing insights from across a wide range of disciplines and cultures.

Our European Studies MA course will give you a detailed understanding of the politics, history, economy and societies of Europe. As a full-time student, you may also take either a French or German pathway, which offers you the opportunity to complete a master’s degree within a year while taking modules abroad. Places on these pathways have separate capacity restrictions.

King’s contains one of the largest concentrations of medievalists in the UK, bringing together scholars in medieval history, languages, literature and culture, with expertise across Europe and Asia. Our MA in Medieval Studies not only offers specialist training in crucial research skills—in particular, medieval Latin and palaeography—but also is outward-looking, exploring and critiquing the place of medieval history and perceptions of the medieval past in the world today.

The MA Japanese Studies dual degree is based at Sophia University – Japanese Master’s programmes are typically two years long, and SOAS contributes to it by offering its MA in Japanese Studies as an option for students originally enrolled at Sophia University.

The MA Postcolonial Studies programme offers a focus on the historical relationships of power, domination and practices of imperialism and colonialism in the modern period (late nineteenth century to the present) through the study of literature and culture.

MA in English - Literary Studies To provide students with the opportunity to develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of English Literary Studies, enabling students to pursue specialized fields of study or to choose a flexible arrangement of topics that bypass traditional period or national boundaries.

The MA in Japanese Studies and Intensive Language is a 2-year full-time (or four-year part-time) programme. This MA is designed to provide intensive language training at different proficiency levels - depending on entry level - within a master's programme in Japanese Studies. Master transferable language and analytical skills in order to prepare for a variety of potential future professional or research careers.
