19 Humanities MA Degree Programs in Hungary

Our Designer- Maker MA programme enables students to become open-minded professionals who are receptive to global trends and local challenges and can provide sustainable responses through material-oriented solutions. Students can learn to use their art to make an internationally relevant positive impact, whether by creating craft-produced limited-series items or autonomous works of art intended for exhibitions and the art market. Research assignments, design studies, and studio exercises provide opportunities to participate in national and international professional events, exhibitions, and competitions and facilitate career advancement after graduation.

The master’s program in German language, literature and culture at the KRE imparts specialist knowledge in the areas of German literature, language and culture. Philologists who have excellent knowledge of German and who can master the professional challenges of the 21st century at a high intellectual level are trained here with continuously updated teaching focuses and methods. The language of the MA course is German throughout.

The Institute for Art Theory and Media Studies at ELTE is currently the only higher institution of education in Hungary to offer an English-language MA degree in Film Studies.

Central European Studies is an interdisciplinary master's program at Eötvös Loránd University, involving five institutes at the Faculty of Humanities.

The MA course offered by the Institute of Philosophy at the Faculty of Humanities is a two-year, full-time program comprising four semesters. Students need to have some philosophical background – a minimum of 30 credits as part of their BA studies.

Students with a BA in humanities or social sciences and C1-level English can apply to the two- or four-semester English and American Studies programme at the University of Pannonia. The programme provides in-depth training in language, literature (British, American, postcolonial), linguistics (theoretical, applied, computational), and the society and culture of English-speaking countries.

The goal of the degree program in MA in English Studies is to train experts in the field of English Studies who have sound theoretical, methodological and practical knowledge of the English language and can apply such knowledge in practice. They have thorough knowledge and understanding of the literature, culture and the social and political systems of English-speaking countries, including Great Britain, Ireland and Canada, the major trends and research fields of modern theoretical and applied linguistics and their results that mainly apply to the English language.

Within the Institute of History, the Department for Interdisciplinary History has been providing education in the field of cultural heritage since 2012, initially as a specialization of the History MA program, and from 2016 in the form of an independent Hungarian master's degree program. Since 2018, the Department has been coordinating a bilingual (English and French) Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree program on cultural heritage (TEMA+ European Territories. Heritage and Development), in association with four partner universities (Charles University, Prague; École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris; University of Catania; Université Laval, Québec) and in cooperation with European Heritage Label (EHL) and various UNESCO organs. The English-language Cultural Heritage Studies MA program is based on the domestic and international experiences of the department. The program includes two specializations: 1) Theory of Cultural Heritage, 2) Museum and Curatorial Studies. The program provides internships for students in several institutions involved in heritage protection and management.

The Applied Linguistics programme trains experts who can support effective information flow at societal level using linguistic knowledge and research methods, contributing to the right to information. Students explore language processing, acquisition, bilingual and multilingual communication, and language policy. The four-semester MA prepares graduates for doctoral studies.

At the University of Pécs, Faculty of Humanities You may learn MA in Archeology at the master's level. Our graduates develop their knowledge and skills in various methods of the theory and practice of archaeology to achieve successful careers as leaders of excavation projects, as museologists, or as potential members of research groups. You will be suitable for the exploration, excavation, and processing of archaeological sources and sites, as well as for the management of such museum collections. You may be also familiar with other areas of cultural heritage in order to carry out the basic tasks in all institutions responsible for the exploration, protection, processing, and presentation of cultural heritage. In addition, You will have the knowledge needed to fill the position of archaeologist-museologist.

The goal of the program is to train professionals who are capable of practicing archaeology with their acquired general knowledge in archaeology and in selected specializations. The program provides comprehensive knowledge of a number of fields in the archaeology of Central Europe and Eurasia. It focuses on topics such as the archaeology of rituals, the archaeology of art, styles, and identities, the archaeology of war, the archaeology of feasts and food, social archaeology, the archaeology of death, trade, transport, and mobility.

The MA in Aesthetics (Specialisation in Classics) enables you to engage in scholarship and research at Masters level within the sphere of aesthetics, philosophies and theories of art. The basic module provides both a chronological overview of the most important stages of philosophical thinking about art and an in-depth analysis of the main issues in contemporary philosophical discourse on art. The Classical Studies specialisation provides theoretical knowledge of the arts of antiquity and the early Middle Ages, as well as practical knowledge of how to deal with ancient art in contemporary culture.

This master-level program in English with 120 ECTS credits is suited as a degree preparing for a teaching ministry and/or doctoral studies. The program offers a hermeneutical and contextual approach in all theological disciplines and introduces deep biblical insights to current problems of our society.

The objective of this two-year program (120 credits) is to train specialists in three areas: English Literature and Culture, English Applied Linguistics, Society and Culture of English-Speaking Countries.

American Studies is a branch of the study of the English language and English-speaking cultures. It deals primarily, but not exclusively, with the United States of America. Everyone has an image of America, for example, through the influence of relatives, personal travels, or the media.
