The MA Gender Studies is our popular programme that creates a pedagogical space where students grapple with the limits of ‘Western’ and elite feminisms and tackle the problems of class violence, racism, transmisogyny, Islamophobia, ableism and queerphobia in contemporary feminist political projects.

The Master's program in Gender Studies at the Faculty of Humanities at Charles University in Prague (FHS UK) offers the opportunity for a systematic and interdisciplinary academic study of theoretical and methodological tools for researching and exploring gender issues from a historical perspective, with a consideration of cultural and ethnic aspects of any given topic. Gender studies apply intersectional and interdisciplinary perspectives on gender as one of the basic principles organizing human society and culture. Gender studies focus on the analysis of historical as well as contemporary manifestations of the gender order, the influence of feminist and queer theories and methods in science and research, and other aspects of gender order; they also probe the relationship between gender and other categories of social differentiation and stratification such as race/ethnicity, social status, age, sexuality, and/or disability. One of the specific strengths and an internationally recognized expertise of the gender studies program at the School of Humanities is the emphasis put on analysis and reflection of post-socialist experiences and reflections of gender structuring of the late-socialist Czechoslovak society, and “East European” societies in general. The study program is realized without specialization.

Master of Arts in Gender Studies The one-year MA program offers a condensed grounding in interdisciplinary gender studies for students with substantial previous background in gender studies or a related field (a minimum of a four-year BA is required). Applicants are asked to demonstrate their formal or informal exposure to some aspect of gender studies, along with evidence of initial thinking about a broad area of research.

The MA degree in Critical Gender Studies is designed to educate and train future generations of gender specialists in a variety of fields and professions that address the many gendered political, cultural and social challenges of contemporary society. These fields include education, academic research, social services, non-governmental organizations, policy, social change advocacy, government advising and applied research, journalism, as well as jobs that entail various kinds of artistic production.

The MA Gender and Sexuality programme aim to re-focus issues prioritised in Western Gender Studies and Queer Studies on the complex specificities of Asia, Africa and the Near and Middle East.
