The mission of the MA in Psychology with an emphasis in Counseling Psychology program is to provide its participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to become competent in counseling psychology through academic and experiential learning. The program aims at educating future psychologists who have sound knowledge of the theory and practice of counseling psychology, who are competent consumers and creative producers of social science research, who are competent in counseling practice, and who are ethical and sensitive to the cultures, values, and worlds of various clients.

The MA (Clinical Psychology) program leads to registration as a Clinical Psychologist with the Professional Board of Psychology of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). This full-time program encompasses the broad spectrum of Clinical Psychology. The program consists of a research component (completion of a minor dissertation) as well as attending workshops, contact sessions, and practical work.

This program is based on an integrated curriculum intended to produce clinicians trained in theory, research, and clinical skills. Students accepted into the Master of Arts program can elect to specialize in mental health counseling or mental health counseling with a forensic psychology concentration.

This Program provides integrated professional and advanced academic training equipping the student to function as a Clinical Psychologist and leads the student to be able to apply for an internship in Clinical Psychology and, thereafter, undergo a Professional Board Exam in Clinical Psychology. After successful completion of a Professional Board Exam, the student can then apply to the Professional Board for Psychology of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) for registration as a Clinical Psychologist. Such registration will be subject to any professional conditions and requirements stipulated by the Professional Board for Psychology and the HPCSA at the time of registration.

Students have the option to enroll in and complete a dance/movement therapy concentration within the M.A. in clinical mental health counseling program.

Others choose to begin careers in industry, mental health, community agency and education settings.
