The MA in History and Theory of Art and Architecture (MSTAA) includes the study of the history of both architecture and art. It is a complete Master which aims at counteracting the growing marginalisation of architecture in art history studies. At the same time, the study of the history of art and architecture in different eras (medieval, modern and contemporary) is complemented by in-depth studies on the theory and criticism of architecture, artistic literature, the history and practice of restoration (with moments of practice in the field), museology and digital humanities with an eye towards other artistic and cultural expressions like photography, cinema, theatre, and literature. Practical workshops and internships in affiliated institutions complete the Master's training offer.

The MA Architecture Programme (ARB/RIBA Part II) at the Royal College of Art is a research-driven, studio-based post-graduate education that critically tests the making of architecture and spatial practice. The program supports the development of each student’s personal position and practices relative to the field. The program fosters an inclusive, critical, and responsive, context in which architecture is explored as a medium, rather than a goal in itself. We are attentive to urgent political, social, and ecological questions, which allows us to interrogate the contexts and processes of architectural production and support our students to redefine practice.

The Architecture and Sustainable Heritage MA offers a distinctive programme for those interested in studying the historic built environment. The course provides a unique platform for students to advance careers in heritage practice or engage in specialised research.

The Faculty of Architecture and Design’s M.A. in “Architecture & Spatial Practices” is available in both one-year and two-year formats. The program features an international, practice- and research-oriented curriculum with an open thematic focus. In the two-year program, the first year expands on foundational skills in design, construction, and research, while the second year aligns with the one-year program.

Cities, buildings, parks and landscapes define the setting of our everyday life. Some are fascinating works of art, and no other man made artefacts document the evolution of social relations, economic trends, technological innovations, philosophical views on man and nature, politics and culture more eloquently than architecture and urbanism. Cities and buildings impact our everyday lives. They define where and how we live, how far we have to travel to reach our working places, our daily rhythms of our movements, the things we see when we are on our way. Their impact on health is self-evident – urban planners gave us our sewage systems, architects decent public housing and healthcare buildings. This master track provides students a rich and varied introduction in the history and theory of architecture and urban planning. Since healthcare architecture requires a thorough understanding of the history and theory of architecture, and the world of healthy cities can only be analyzed against the background of urbanism, the Expertise Centre Architecture, Urbanism and Health is embedded in a classical approach of architectural and urban history and theory. It allows students to specialize in classical history and theory, the health impacts of architecture and urbanism, or a mixture

The Master of Science in Architecture with a concentration in Critical Heritage Studies can be combined with the Masters of Arts in Anthropology. The Critical Heritage / Anthropology combination allows students to pursue interconnected, interdisciplinary coursework and allows time for an independent research thesis that is not part of the stand-alone MS in Critical Heritage curriculum.

The MA in Arts and Culture: History of Architecture and Urbanism positions the evolution of the European city (including the post-socialist cities in Central and Eastern Europe) as intimately linked with trends and tendencies at the global scale. The input of the Thomassen a Thuessink Chair results in a clear focus on the health effects of the built environment and the phenomena summarized in the healthy cities concept (ranging from yesterday's hygienic measures to tomorrow's urban guerilla gardening campaigns).

Housing and Urbanism (HU) focuses on the key contemporary issues that drive urban transformation, and examines the role of architecture in promoting and supporting critical change. The programme offers MA (12 months) and MArch (16 months) options, and addresses the lived city and the central role of residential life in the urban process.

History and Critical Thinking (HCT) is a 12-month MA programme that offers a postgraduate platform from which to develop and communicate knowledge, connecting contemporary issues with systematic historical enquiry.

This one-year full-time MA in Architectural Design is aimed at students looking for a rich, advanced and engaging post-graduate programme that focuses on the multiple facets and relationships between design and research. Pursuing the MA in Architectural Design will give students the necessary skills to become sophisticated design-research thinkers and practitioners.

The Critical Heritage/Public History dual degree builds upon these two complementary programs. UNC Charlotte’s faculty and students engage in a curriculum and research that seeks local solutions while engaging in global conversations; emphasizes hands-on engagement with communities and organizations; challenges authorized heritage discourses; diversifies approaches and practices of engaging with the past; and promotes the stories and sites that foreground the heritage of underrepresented communities.

The Master of Arts in Advanced Architectural Design (MA-ARH) program prepares the student through the process of critical thinking, designing, and making to provide meaningful contributions to architectural design. We work to develop each student’s individual interest through critical thought, rigorous exploration, and personal vision. The Master of Arts degree program is regionally accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC).
