The School of Design is home to internationally significant research, much of which is practice-based. The teaching and research areas of the School – Design Products, Fashion, Innovation Designing Engineering, Healthcare Design, Robotics, Service Design and Textiles – represent a wide range of approaches to design research.

The Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design is the global leader of inclusive design, with a focus on age, health and (dis)ability. The Ageing, Health & Inclusive Design MPhil/PhD programme focuses on the creative and systematic inquiry of issues relating to ageing, health, and/or inclusive design.

Our MPhil and PhD degrees are grounded firmly in research theory and methods, while maintaining and encouraging a high degree of creativity and experimentation.

Based in the Centre for Materials Science & Culture, the Materials Science MPhil/PhD programme focuses on the invention and the experience of materials to address real world challenges, such as environmental sustainability, and human health and wellbeing.

The Computer Science Research Centre welcomes postgraduate students (MPhil/PhD) from a wide range of cross-disciplinary backgrounds to address strategic needs in priority research areas such as Computer Graphics and Visualisations, Smart and Interactive Technologies, Artificial Intelligence, and Information Systems.

The Intelligent Mobility research programme explores novel vehicle types, services, and integrated city solutions. Building on the RCA’s world-leading Intelligent Mobility MA programme, the Intelligent Mobility MPhil/PhD programme promotes critical and thoughtful research and design in the development of future mobility.

The Arts and humanities is a dynamic interplay between theory and practice. The School provides expert supervision across the spectrum of art and writing practice, art and design history and theory, curating, and criticism. We welcome proposals for theoretical and practice-led projects, industrial collaborations, and technologically focused research.

The MPhil/PhD Architecture research programme focuses on practice-led and interdisciplinary research with tangible public and social impact. Working at the intersection of theory, research, media, and critical-spatial practices, the MPhil/ PhD programme in Architecture supports experimental practice-led and interdisciplinary theses aiming at tangible public and social impact.

The Robotics PhD programme promotes a creative, interdisciplinary approach to robotics, seamlessly integrating engineering principles with artistic and design perspectives.
