25 M.Phil. (Master of Philosophy) Degree Programs in Asia

The Master of Philosophy programme (MPhil) and the Doctor of Philosophy programme (PhD) consist of coursework and research studies leading to the submission of a thesis. Both degrees are offered in full-time and part-time modes.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes of Master of Philosophy in Microelectronics is to apply knowledge and recognize specialist topics in microelectronics research.

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Pharmaceutical Sciences Programme offered by the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS) at the University of Macau (UM) is designed to provide students with a comprehensive and advanced understanding of pharmaceutical sciences.

Students will expand their knowledge of history and develop skills in critical analysis, conducting research, and writing a discourse on a topic of the history field. In the end, the students will be better equipped for further academic study, or for professional career in the future.

The programme aims to develop the student’s knowledge of language, linguistics, literatures and cultures of the Portuguese speaking world as well as to increase the cultural literacy and critical thinking skills. There are two specializations available, namely the Literary and Cultural Studies and Applied Linguistics.

The MPhil in Environmental Studies at City University of Hong Kong is a research-based postgraduate degree that prepares students to tackle some of the most urgent environmental challenges of our time. Hosted by the School of Energy and Environment, the programme centres on fundamental and applied research in areas critical to environmental sustainability, including air and water pollution control and management, climate change modelling, mitigation and adaptation, and waste–to–energy and resource recovery. This multidisciplinary focus allows students to explore complex environmental systems and issues both locally and globally, drawing on expertise from atmospheric science, environmental chemistry, water quality science, and resource management.

The MPhil in Energy at the City University of Hong Kong is a research-intensive postgraduate degree offered through the School of Energy and Environment (SEE). This programme is designed for students who are passionate about advancing knowledge and innovation in the energy sector, particularly in areas that will shape future sustainable energy systems. At the heart of the programme is a commitment to understanding and developing solutions across four key research pillars: Energy Conversion, Clean and Green Fuels, Energy Efficiency, and Energy Storage, reflecting the school’s broader research strategy toward sustainable and resilient energy technologies.

The MPhil in Sustainability at City University of Hong Kong is a research-oriented postgraduate degree offered through the School of Energy and Environment that prepares students to contribute original research and solutions toward sustainable development in urban and economic systems. The programme is grounded in a broad, interdisciplinary sustainability agenda that addresses major societal challenges such as urban sustainability for smart cities, energy and sustainable economics, low-carbon innovation, and policy design and analysis. This integrative focus enables students to explore how sustainability goals can be pursued through systemic research that bridges technological, economic, social and policy dimensions.
