Tax laws have become increasingly complex in the last century. More and more anti-avoidance measures have recently been introduced to curb the effectiveness of tax avoidance structures, thus increasing the volumes of tax provisions applicable to day-to-day commercial transactions. The Master’s in Tax Law is a structured qualification intended to provide candidates with an in-depth understanding of the tax code as well as developing tax laws in South Africa and in the international community.

The Masters in Taxation program (LLM Tax Law), for full-time or part-time students, is a comprehensive, advanced-degree program designed for attorneys intending to specialize in tax practice. It focuses not only on technical mastery of the tax laws but also on wider issues of tax and fiscal policy. Most of the courses in the curriculum provide survey level instruction in subjects typically not addressed in J.D. level tax courses.

Boston University School of Law’s Graduate Tax Program (GTP), established in 1959 as one of the nation’s first graduate tax programs, stands as one of the best. The Graduate Tax Program’s online option affords active practitioners a flexible way to earn BU Law’s highly ranked LLM in Taxation degree. Ideal for lawyers whose jobs preclude them from attending BU’s residential program in Boston, the program’s format allows students to begin their course of study in any of three sessions — fall, spring, or summer — and enroll in a variety of specialized tax courses. Students can complete the 24 credits required for the LLM in Taxation degree on a full-time or part-time basis. Full-time students complete the degree in two sessions, while part-time students may complete the degree in as few as four consecutive sessions or over the course of four years, depending on the demands of their schedules.
