The LLM in American Law Practice is designed to ensure success for foreign-trained attorneys, both while at the Sturm College of Law and beyond. Students will have access to ESL support alongside introductory classes designed to build on their prior legal experience.

The Master of Laws (LL.M.) one-year program provides a concentrated post-graduate legal study program for practicing lawyers or graduates of foreign or domestic law schools. Students have the option to pursue a thesis or non-thesis Master of Laws degree.

The LLM in U.S. Law program is designed for attorneys and law school graduates educated outside of the United States. Candidates for the LLM in  U.S. Law are enrolled in two required courses, Intro to U.S. Law and Legal Writing and Research. Other courses are electives and may be taken in any area of law. Students have the option of pursuing a Concentration in one of six popular areas of law.

The Master of Studies in Law (MSL) program is a non-professional, terminal degree program designed for those who do not plan to practice law or take a bar exam, but want to increase their understanding of the law and legal analysis.

The National Security Law programs the George Washington University Law School highlight our unique strengths: a nationally recognized faculty, a comprehensive curriculum, and access to the extensive Washington, D.C., foreign relations, cybersecurity, and national security law community. While a number of U.S. law schools offer one or two courses in these fields, few others approach the number of courses available at GW Law. Students can choose between receiving an LL.M. in National Security and Cybersecurity Law, an LL.M. in National Security and U.S. Foreign Relations Law, or an MSL in Cybersecurity.

All candidates for the LLM degree must complete a total of 24 credit hours, including course work that satisfies the written work requirement.

The LL.M. degree program consists of 24 credits hours of study and can normally be completed in a year, although a part-time option is available for domestic students in the LL.M. in Dispute Resolution program.

The general LL.M. program offers law graduates an opportunity to broaden their backgrounds in certain specialized areas of law by enrolling in advanced courses and seminars and by engaging in specialized research. Most students seeking this degree concentrate in areas such as corporate and commercial law, international law, intellectual property law, legal practice and procedure, natural resources law, or property law.

While the 24-credit LLM in Banking & Financial Law can be completed in one year of full-time study, BU Law offers several other enrollment options based on your educational background, professional experience, and English proficiency, and location. With more than 25 courses offered, you can choose from a variety of classes and schedules that best suit your needs and interests. The Banking & Financial Law program offers the same challenging program of LLM studies in an entirely online format, an attractive alternative for domestic and internationally trained attorneys whose jobs preclude them from attending our traditional on-site program option in Boston. The online courses are taught by residential faculty and no distinction is made on a student’s transcript or diploma. The online graduates receive the same transcript and diploma as students in the residential program.

The LLM in US Legal Studies program provides core training in United States law and comprehensive preparation for foreign attorneys and law graduates to take the state bar examination. The program also allows students to concentrate on a particular area of U.S. law. It teaches foreign-educated lawyers about the basic foundations of American law and prepares them to understand, analyze, and write about issues in American law.

This program offers students the flexibility to develop a curriculum in U.S. law topics that suit their particular needs and interests. This degree is designed for students who have received their primary legal education in civil law countries and who plan to return to their home countries within a few years of receiving the LLM degree.
