7 Literacy Degree Programs in Canada

This course is designed to help students acquire and demonstrate the cross-curricular literacy skills that are evaluated by the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). Students who complete the course successfully will meet the provincial literacy requirement for graduation. Students will read a variety of informational, narrative, and graphic texts and will produce a variety of forms of writing, including summaries, information paragraphs, opinion pieces, and news reports. Students will also maintain and manage a portfolio containing a record of their reading experiences and samples of their writing.

The study of religion aims to understand religious thought and practices as aspects of the culture and society that produced them. It offers an opportunity to explore beliefs and ideas, philosophies and mythologies, rituals and symbols, etc., that shape the cultures and civilizations of the world both in historical perspective and as contemporary phenomena.

This course prepares the student to respond to and critique a variety of short texts, to experience literature from a more intimate perspective and to empathize through the words and actions of the characters in the play. It promotes familiarity with history’s most influential writers and what makes them still relevant today through the use of a modern storytelling device.

The goal of this course is to help students further develop their academic English language skills and move toward mastery of grade-level-appropriate academic language. Literary Studies develops the theme of personal discovery. Conventions of language—grammar, usage, and vocabulary—are applied to descriptive, narrative and expository paragraph and essay compositions.

The Faculty of Cross-Cultural Studies (FCCS) includes departments and programs that are committed to decolonizing and indigenizing teaching, learning and academia and have a history of being actively engaged with this work and weaving Indigenous knowledge throughout curriculum and teaching.

The Master of Conference Interpreting (MCI) degree is a two-year program, lasting a total of six academic terms. Program candidates must pass an entrance examination, at which point they will enter Year One. Upon successful completion of the first three terms of Year One, students have the option of exiting the program and receiving the Graduate Diploma in General Interpreting. Those who elect to stay in the program must pass a transition examination leading to Year Two. After the successful completion of another three terms—and of the end-of-degree exit examination—students will earn the Master of Conference Interpreting degree.
