Food and beverage industry is one of biggest and steady growing manufacturing sector in terms of jobs and value added. Over the last century, the global population has quadrupled and food demand is expected to increase anywhere between 59% to 98% by 2050. More and more qualified specialists will be needed who can analyse the nutritional content of food, discover new food products, and research ways to make processed foods safe and healthy.

'One Medicine - One Health' concept links human, animal and environmental health. In recent years the science of veterinary medicine has rapidly expanded. At present this science is vital for animal protection, herd health, monitoring of widespread diseases and safe food production of animal origin. It is important for human health to provide careful monitoring of livestock health and emerging zoonotic diseases.

The field of knowledge that an engineer is required to possess has been constantly increasing. Furthermore, the opportunities for designing equipment and machinery are expanding. Alongside engineering knowledge, it is necessary to estimate global challenges and find solutions that are compatible with green thinking and sustainable development.

The "Research and Protection of Cultural and Environmental Heritage" is a unique study program in Latvia providing academic education at the Bachelor's level in the Natural Sciences. The uniqueness of this study program is in its pronounced interdisciplinarity – it has been developed in close cooperation with the Art Academy of Latvia. Apart from the lecturers from the Academy and the Faculty of Geography and Earth Sciences, the courses are taught also by the teaching staff from the Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of History and Philosophy, and Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Latvia.

The aim of the program is to provide professional master studies in the field of Ecotechnologies directed to holistic and sustainable development by promoting the integration of interdisciplinary and research activities and competencies of the environmental experts oriented to constant sustainable development.

The study programme enables students to acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in the field of biotechnology and bioengineering, acquire skills in the design of equipment and processes, and product development. The programme prepares highly qualified specialists and scientists able to compete on both the local and international scientific labour markets.
