Founded in 1933, the Law Department of Yunnan University has been one of the earliest juristic schools in the southwestern area of China. In 1952, the department was moved to Chongqing on the basis of the national faculty adjustment, together with other law schools to form the Southwest College of Political Science and Law. In 1980, the Law Department of Yunnan University was rebuilt and began to enroll new students in the following year. In 1999, the law and economic law departments of the former Yunnan Junior College of Politics and Law merged into the new School of Law of Yunnan University, being the most crucial juristic education and research center in Yunnan province.

Cultivate students to have solid theoretical foundation and specialized knowledge of Law Science, to know the research level and development direction of Law Science and the frontiers of this field at home and abroad, to master certain knowledge of related disciplines, to be capable of using theories and norms of law to solve problems with judicial practice, to be able to make creative research results, to read literature of Law in English without difficulties, to have good ability of writing, conducting international academic exchange, and doing oral communication skillfully.

The law major aims to cultivate both morality and law, comprehensive development of morality, intelligence, physical education, and art, with good humanities and scientific literacy, familiar with the socialist legal system and system with Chinese characteristics, solid legal theory, a strong sense of social responsibility, and deep labor feelings. Law practice ability, continuous learning ability, innovation and entrepreneurship ability, capable of engaging in various kinds of legal work, especially high-quality, compound and applied professional talents in labor and social security legal work.
