Latin American Studies is dedicated to the study of the history, societies, and cultures of Latin America, Latino/a/x populations in the United States, and the Hispanic and Francophone Caribbean. The Latin American Studies Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) program provides an excellent foundation for graduate study in the humanities, social sciences, and law, non-profit organizations, and international business, which is an important qualification to work with the growing Hispanic population. Latin American Studies is an interdisciplinary program which involves a variety of fields, including Africana studies, anthropology, Spanish, French and Portuguese language, literature and culture, history, philosophy, and political science. It also includes substantial training and education in Spanish, French and/or Portuguese. Students may either earn a Major (Bachelor of Arts) or a Minor in Latin American Studies.

Mexico/Latin American/Latinx Studies is an interdisciplinary program that focuses on the diverse histories and cultures of the Americas. Graduates possess a general knowledge of the problems of Latin America in relation to its historical development and characteristic culture that has evolved since the late 16th century, on the basis of pre-Colombian communities and immigration from colonial metropolises and Africa. Graduates have a knowledge of the basic facts of Latin American history, and the ability to learn new facts, being helped by the knowledge of the theory and methodology of the discipline. Graduates are familiar with the development of opinions on the basic problems of the region’s history, and the discipline’s institutions, personalities, periodicals, and key works. They have developed language skills in Spanish and English enabling them to study specialized literature and engage in discussions within the international scientific community.

The Master's Degree in Anthropology of Latin America is organised jointly by the Universities of Salamanca, Valladolid and León. It focuses on anthropological specialisation, applied to knowledge of the cultures of the Latin American area. It has optional subjects that deal with sociological and, more generally, humanistic aspects, always in relation to the ethnology of the aforementioned socio-cultural area. The comparative and intercultural perspectives that are proposed in the research that is required to obtain the Master's degree are also very appropriate for studying in depth the relationship between the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America in areas such as indigenous peoples, emigration, education, international relations, tourism, heritage, cooperation, etc.

The Latin American Studies (LAS) major explores Latin American culture through language study, the humanities and the social sciences. Core courses in history, literature and politics will give you a base for understanding the life of the region. Then, you’ll take five courses in a more narrowly focused track, choosing from Gender and Sexuality, Race and Ethnicity, Politics and International Relations, History, Literature and Cultural Studies and the Latin American Diaspora.
