Today's world is entering an era of interdependence. Japan is a part of this system of global cooperation. However, it is also an era of wars, political strife, and many economic and environmental problems that cause disruption of societies' well-being. In order to deal with this complex international environment, there is a need for people trained in international affairs. This faculty hopes to equip people with the understanding of other cultures and languages necessary to meet future challenges. In the future, Japan will continue to be deeply involved with both the West and Asia. Knowledge of the languages and cultures of both these areas will become increasingly important. In response to these future needs, the faculty has attempted to structure its curriculum around the study of these two areas.

Chinese philosophy – of which the Hundred Schools of Thought is representative – offers profound insight into the world and human nature and has majorly influenced culture formation in East Asia, including in Japan. Students in this major study the important Confucian, Taoist, legal, and military thinkers who contributed to the formation of Chinese thought. In addition to classical works, they revisit commonly accepted theories in light of new materials discovered in recent excavations.

In 1854, Japan surrendered to the might of Commodore Perry’s Black Ships with the signing of the Convention of Kanagawa, ending the country’s long isolation under sakoku . The Minor Course for Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language in SU began in 1988. More than 30 graduates who completed this course, including overseas students, have taken Japanese language teacher jobs in Japanese language institutions in Japan and overseas.

In recent years, when the number of Chinese tourists has increased in Japan, human resources who can speak Chinese are required from various sites. Since Chinese has the same Chinese characters, it is actually a foreign language that Japanese people are familiar with. Today, it is a natural ability to speak English. The Japanese Literature program offers an all-encompassing education in the literature of Japan, from the ancient to the medieval and early modern as well as modern and contemporary. The course involves detailed readings of individual works and suggests various ways to approach different authors and the prevailing trends of different eras, resulting in significant findings. Members of the faculty include Professor Iikura Yōichi (early modern literature), Associate Professor Saitō Masao (modern and contemporary literature), and Associate Professor Seta Michio (medieval literature).
