This program allows you to acquire both the knowledge and the experience necessary to join the community of language professionals: translators, terminologists and interpreters.

This course allows students to improve their reading skills and grammar accuracy in both spoken and written English. In this class, a wide variety of reading texts are studied in detail. The diversity in content exposes students to a broad range of vocabulary and grammar, as well as literary forms.

The English Language Learning (ELL) program is an intensive, five-semester, five-level, full-time program for students who speak English as a second language. This program can help build English Language skills for success in college, university, and a career. English Language Learning is available at both Progress Campus and the Eglinton Learning Site.

Linguistics is the scientific study of human language. It explores the many intricate rules that govern and structure all human languages, including grammar and phonetics. Linguistics also offers understanding of the physical, mental, and social processes that surround all verbal and non-verbal communication. If you’ve ever wondered how the brain processes language, how infants learn to speak, why different people have different accents, how languages have evolved over time, or how we can preserve endangered languages, then linguistics is for you.

Modern Languages, Literature, and Cultures provide expertise in two languages and knowledge of a third — as well as the literature and culture of the relevant communities. The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures is composed of five areas: French, German, Hispanic Studies, Japanese, and linguistics. This program exposes you to the practical study of language within small class sizes to provide an opportunity to acquire many skills that will serve you well in your future endeavors, including superior communicative competence, cultural awareness, and aesthetic literacy.
