51 Islamic Studies Degree Programs

The MA Islamic Humanities explores the social, cultural, and intellectual history, arts, and philosophy of the Islamic world. Using interdisciplinary approaches, it challenges essentialist narratives and highlights diversity. Open to all academic backgrounds, no prior knowledge of Islam or other languages is required.

Students deploy inter-disciplinary humanities approaches to the Islamic world, and engage seriously with its production in the humanities not as an afterthought to the traditional humanities but as a source of critical insights for a global humanities. Challenging essentialist narratives, the programme fosters an appreciation of diversity – regional, cultural and religio-intellectual – within the Islamic world.

A thesis is completed on a topic chosen with the Department and written under supervision. Students focus on a topic from the field of Arabic, Islamic Studies, Hebrew (including Jewish Studies), or a cognate Semitic Language.

In this Research Master's Program you will study how religion is embedded in present-day and in historical cultural contexts. You will explore the impact of local and global socio-economic and political developments on religion, and how religion contributes to such developments. A staff member whose research interests in religion matches yours best, will act as your supervisor throughout the Program.
