Key Summary
The Interdisciplinary Arts programme’s unique focus is on:
- Cross-disciplinary collaboration: Students collaborate with artists, researchers, policymakers, and entrepreneurs, gaining exposure to a wide range of professional perspectives.
- Professional practice: From the second year onward, students engage in real-world cases from industry partners and cultural institutions, giving them direct insight into professional environments.
- Change-making: Graduates of iArts emerge as critically engaged change agents who can navigate complex social and scientific issues through artistic, entrepreneurial, and research-driven approaches.
Upon completion of the programme, graduates are equipped with the tools and skills needed to work in a variety of sectors, including governmental agencies, businesses, and arts organizations. They are often found leading projects at the intersection of art, research, and entrepreneurship, and many pursue their own independent professional practices. As they transition from students to professionals, they continue to be part of the iArts community, where ongoing dialogue with alumni and industry leaders is a core part of the programme.
Interdisciplinary Arts is a four-year Bachelor programme entirely taught in English.
iArts is located in the heart of Maastricht, a European centre of culture and home to 11,000 students. The city’s numerous festivals and events reflect its diverse cultural and historical influences. Maastricht is investing in an inspiring, multifaceted cultural climate.
Programme structure
We start by introducing you to three learning pathways:
Home-Based Learning (HBL) courses, Project-Based Learning and Research & Development Lab.
Home-Based Learning (HBL) consists of courses that enable you to develop your artistic and academic skills. Project-Based Learning calls on the following competencies: problem analysis, research, planning, concept development, creation, production, peer group collaboration, documentation and evaluation. Within the Research & Development Lab, you explore your fascinations, but we keep you on your toes through reflection and artistic interventions.
Throughout the study, the emphasis shifts increasingly to working in the context of professional practice. In the final year, you map out your graduation process, guided by your coach and your experts in the field.
After graduation
iArts professionals work as decision-makers at the intersection of art, research and entrepreneurship. They often have their professional practice, but they also work at government agencies and businesses.
After graduation you will be:
- a critically engaged change agent who can combine the skills of an artist, entrepreneur and researcher. You will develop and produce relevant interventions for current issues, whether local or global.
- a multi-talented change-maker who is capable of translating social and scientific issues into artistic and interdisciplinary practice.
- a thought leader who can explore and intervene in unpredictable, precarious and near-impossible contexts.
