Key Summary
Introduction
Do you want to make a difference for the next European generation? Do you want influence in important political decisions that have an impact on your life, finances, rights and the environment around you? Our society calls for a new generation policy advisors, communication strategists, lobbyists and politicians. There is a growing demand in the international labour market for graduates who know from personal experience what it means to study and work in an international environment. People who can communicate fluently in various European languages; for whom the political structures in Europe have no secrets; professionals who can manage cultural differences and who can be widely employed because of their extensive knowledge in the fields of international communication. All of this is covered in just one study programme: European Studies.
Highlights of European Studies
Gather the skills to make a positive change in European society.
- Practical Learning: Apply theory to real-world assignments, preparing you for your future career.
- Multilingual Programme: Fully taught in English plus a second language (German, French, or Spanish).
- Small-scale and personal: Learn in small groups with close teacher interaction and many social activities.
- Customize your studies: Explore topics you love through study abroad, a (pre-master) minor and an internship.

To prepare you for the international labour market, we offer you an international learning environment and you will study in English.ย After completing this four-year (full-time) study programme, you will have a Bachelor's degree in European Studies and you can continue to a Master's study if you like.
European Studies in Maastricht is the right choice of study for you if you want to get a perfect preparation for a successful career in an international working environment.
Topics
Europe and the European Union are the linking elements in this study programme. Knowledge of European institutions, policy, law, and public affairs are essential. The focus of European Studies is on the communication between governments, companies and civil society. We will help you to develop excellent (intercultural) communication skills, which means you also will learn about different cultures, as well as international relations.
Two languages
You will study two European languages. English is compulsory for everyone. As your second language, you can choose French, German or Spanish either at beginner's level or at an intermediate level. You will get a practical, hands-on approach to the language training that makes you able to express yourself fluently, both orally and in writing. Every language course also discusses the culture in the areas in which this language is spoken. Collaborating with a Frenchman or negotiating with an Englishman, makes a world of difference!
You will be prepared for your future job
Our teaching method is designed around practical assignments. Every 10 weeks, you and your fellow students will work on a project based on block topics. In each study block, you focus on one of the jobs that you could fulfil after graduation. From project manager to a policy advisor on sustainability for instance. This way, you will get to know these roles, see whether you like them and if youโre good at them. Through lectures and workshops you will learn theory which you can apply in your group projects and examinations such as assignments, presentations and oral or written exams.
Team work is an essential part of this studies. This way, you will develop practical andย social skills that you will need for your future job. Giving presentations, doing research and reporting results, but also professional communication in a foreign language such as French, German and Spanish.
Admissions
Curriculum
A wide range of courses
Europe and the European Union form the central themes of this study programme. A solid understanding of European institutions, policies and public affairs is fundamental. Throughout the programme, you will develop outstanding (intercultural) communication skills, gaining insights into different cultures and international relations along the way.
What does your first year look like?
In each study block, you focus on one main topic, indicated in bold in the schedule below. Within the block, you follow courses that are all related to the block topic. The number of EC refers to the European Credit Transfer System and indicates the number of study points you will earn for a particular course once you complete it. One EC point equals 28 hours of study. Looking at the total numbers of a course, you can see how much time you will be spending on that course. When you have completed all courses, you will have earned 60 EC at the end of a study year.
Exchange and internship
In your third year you will leave Maastricht for half a year and study abroad at one of our many international partner universities all over the world during a study exchange. In year four you will go on internship: your second possibility to go abroad! Time to put your knowledge to the test in a professional environment.
Examples of possible internship providers are:
- European Institutions
- European, national or local governmental organizations
- NGOs and IGOs
- Embassies and consulates
Minor
For your Minor, you can choose to stay at Zuyd or choose a minor at another university. At the Maastricht School of European Studies, we offer minors in Human Rights, Central and Eastern Europe, German, Spanish, Understanding (Counter)Terrorism and the Pre-Master minor. The Pre-Master will give you direct entry to the Masterโs programme of European Studies at Maastricht University.
