Ideal Students
A select group of students from around the globe are chosen to join the doctoral program every 2 years. Currently, the MIT Zaragoza PhD Program has an international student body of doctoral students from all different continents.
All PhD applicants must hold an undergraduate and a graduate degree (Master level diploma) or equivalent qualifications from their home countries that qualify them for doctoral studies.
Admissions
Scholarships and Funding
The program covers the tuition and provides students with monthly stipends for 3 years. In return, students are expected to serve as:
- Teaching Assistant (TA) in our Masters Program
- Research Assistant (RA) in related projects
Curriculum
PhD students complete the necessary coursework during the first three semesters. Specifically, during the first year, students take doctoral-level courses offered at ZLC, while they typically spend one semester during the second year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Some examples of such courses are probability and stochastic processes, empirical methods, integer and dynamic programming, inventory management and game theory.
The last three semesters are dedicated to research. Each student is required to take and pass the qualification exam in order to become PhD candidates at the beginning of the fourth semester. They are also expected to submit a proposal for the dissertation.
The dissertation works are expected to be finished by students by the end of the third academic year.
Depending on the particular situation and subject to approval from the PhD Director, the Advisor and ZLC Director, students might be given the opportunity to have short research stays at other leading schools.

1st Year Coursework - Semester 1
Students will spend one semester during second year at MIT (USA). Courses will depend on the research field of interest of the students.
2nd Year Coursework - Semester 2
The last three semesters are dedicated to research. At the beginning of the fourth semester, each student is required to take and pass the qualification exam in order to become PhD Candidates. They are also expected to submit a research paper to a peer-review journal (OR/OM journal list) following their supervisor's recommendations.
3rd Year Coursework - Research
The last year is dedicated to research, and students are expected to finish their dissertation work by the end of the third academic year. Depending on the particular situation and subject to approval from the PhD Director, the Advisor and ZLC Director, students might be given the opportunity to have short research stays at other leading schools.
