Introduction
The General Studies LL.M. Program provides lawyers and law graduates the flexibility to study a wide range of legal subjects or focus on specific legal areas. Degree candidates design their own course of study based on their needs and objectives.
The General Studies LL.M. degree is earned by successfully completing 24 credit hours with an overall cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better.
Scholarly Writing for LL.M. Students is a two-credit course required for General Studies LL.M. degree candidates. (This course is waived if Scholarly Writing was successfully completed as a J.D. student.)
The remaining 22 elective credits are comprised of J.D. classes and no more than six credits of LL.M. courses from other programs. Students may opt to participate in an externship earning as many as four credits. Some courses may be available in classroom and distance learning environments.
An LL.M. student enrolled in a J.D. elective is considered to be in a “J.D. Plus” class.
The LL.M. student is expected to complete the J.D. course requirements and provide a supplemental LL.M. paper or project that relates to the class subject. The supplemental paper or project is a Graduate Program requirement to fulfill the academic expectations of a graduate student. The “plus” portion of the class is submitted at the end of the term.
